Our cat samantha is 17lbs right now, but has been up to 22lbs in the past. My mom usually does the nail cutting and Sam hates it. Actually, one time, when she tried to do it while having Sam on her lap, the silly cat peed on her. That didn't happen again. Instead, mom takes the clippers and essentially "squats" on the cat, kneeling on the floor with the cat between her legs. I guess putting her bum lightly on Sam's back means she can't stand up to run away. Just need to make sure that you block her with your arms in the front and put your legs together in the back so that he doesn't slide out of the hold. It seems to work well enough, and would save some $ for a vet visit.
Otherwise, good luck with the nail covers.

yay! good to hear my trick worked! And here I've been making fun of mom for looking so silly cutting those dang nails. On the other hand, she DOES look silly and really is quite volnerable to teasing in said squatting position (hehe)

My mom told me to do it about a week ago to avoid going to the vet...I think every mother does it!

He's kept them all on except a few back ones. The front ones are all still on.
Here's a pic in his pretty blue paws

He's had the soft paws for 2 months now and they work really well. I would NEVER declaw my cat--I think it is very cruel.

I heard about that too. Knowing me I'd forget to clip the nails. Glad to hear the soft paws are working!!

Tenectomy is just poor medical practice. You still have to trim the claws...what a pointless procedure [IMO]. Declawing is the only surgical procedure that can be done to address clawing issues, and in many cases it's just not necessary.

Routine nail clipping is usually sufficient, nail caps add to the appearance, and further reduce the ability of the cat to scratch something.

Glad the SoftPaws are working for you!

Mittens is so handsome with his blue nails, and I love that little white patch on his nose.

I don't bother with press-on nails for cats. I just clip their claws nice and blunt, at least once a week. They sometimes fuss, but they're agreeable enought about it. The blunt claw tips work well enough with the clawing/destruction issues. In fact, because their claws don't snag on most things but their scratching post, they aren't interested in scratching anywhere else.

How long do the softpaws last on average before the nail grows too much and they fall off? Are they reusable? (Just thinking about cost.)

I was thinking of putting them on Ho Ho's back claws. He loves being up on my shoulders, and I love it, too.
I check his nails daily to see if they need trimmed, and I do keep them as short as is safely possible. He still manages to claw my neck, chest or back once a day. (Not deep, but enough to hurt, and to leave marks for a few days.)

I figure if he had no problem with having a collar put on him then he should be okay with having something put on his toes.

Basically, you buy the package which has 40 caps. Mittens is starting to shed them right now, I guess they should last about 2 months. NO--you can't reuse them. Besides, if they don't fall off--they'll find a way to chew them off, which is what Mittens is doing this second...
