Diahorrea after recent neutering

I'm toying with the idea of taking Rosso back to the vet today. As many regulars will know he and Bruno were neutered on Friday. He has had diahorrea (sp?) since yesterday and has been sick this morning. It was only liquid because he hadn't been fed when he did it, but I've never seen him vomit since we got him last October.

His "bits" look clean and not infected, though I can see what looks like a red cuts on each - he will insist on keep having a lick! Bruno on the other hand has no marks at all.

Other than this he is quite bright and doesn't seem ill. I don't know whether the diahorrea could be the start of an infection, or a reaction to any drugs, or something completely unrelated that would go away on it's own.

I don't want to leave it and run the risk of him getting ill properly, but on the other hand I don't want to bother the vet for nothing and have them think me a paranoid, over cautious pratt! I phoned them just after he was sick and the receptionist made me an appointment for this afternoon with the option of keeping it if I wasn't happy and cancelling it if I thought he had been OK. To make things more complicated it's really difficult to keep an eye on him today, as I have an electrician working in the house with doors open, floorboards up etc, so I am having to keep all cats confined to the bathroom for their own safety.

If I don't go today, he does have a post-op check up on Friday morning, so it's not as if he won't get seen at all. They did say to take him back if he kept licking it though and I have seen him quite a few times. Oh, I don't know what to do for the best.

Opinions please - I really value the opinions of people on this site. Thanks.

Hi Jan, is he taking in antibiotics after the surgery? Some of my cats have diarrhea when on antibiotics. But to be sure, take him to the vet for a check. It's better safe than sorry. Hope he's going to be fine!

Rosso should see the vet. Vomiting and diarrhea are not symptoms to be treated lightly.

He's not taking antibiotics now, but according to the vet's itemised bill, he had an antibiotic injection at the time. I wondered if this was having an effect.

I think we'd might as well go now I've got the appointment. I hate the thought of wasting their time though, when we've got an appointment on Friday anyway. I've just been to look at him in the bathroom and he's bombing about and generally trashing the place as usual.

Ohh, Rosso needs the vet check. Usually my kitties are on oral antibiotics that they have diarrhea. Keep us posted, alright!

I agree with keeping the vet appointment. I had to laugh when I read your description: "paranoid, over cautious pratt!". If the vet is a good one, they will understand your concern and definitely won't think of you in this way.

Just got back from vet. His temperature is fine, everything else seemed fine, she checked his goolies (or where they were!) as he was neutered on Friday and said they were healing OK. He had antibiotic injection just to make sure and has to eat chicken/fish and rice for 24 hours, then re-introduce kitten food gradually. He has post-op check on Friday anyway.

Thanks everyone, at least I know now.
