Because her first children were more normal weight, my guess is she must have developed diabetes, as Kellye said she thought she thought they said on the news.
When women with diabetes are pregnant, the babies, which don't have diabetes, develop to be unusually large because they process the mom's sugar with their pancreas. Babies of diabetic mothers are usually born via c-section (as in this case) or induced as soon as their lungs are developed. A friend had a 13 pound 7 ounce baby via induced labor - and that was just after seven months, as soon as his lungs could work on their own. They had to break his collar bones to get him out because it wasn't c-section. How horrible for both of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But he only had to stay in the hospital a few days (they're usually born with jaundice), he healed right up (as did she) and though he was such a big baby, he fell into normal growth patterns and past the age of two or so, he was normal for his age.
