\\This morning on my way to work, I hit a poor kitty cat. He dashed right in front of me, there was nothing I could do- it was two late.
I heard him bump two times under my car. I About came unglued.. I slowed down but it was too late...
THe jerk behind me sped up and passed me as I stopped the car. I looked in my mirror and there layed this lifeless little black and white body only A few feet back...
I didn't know what to do.. I couldn't bring myself to get out of the car and pick him up.. and the thought of a half dead/half alive cat just made me sick.. I couldn't pick him up.. I was just so devastated.

I hope someone here can understand where I'm coming from.
NEVER in my live have i ever hit a cat.... EVER.. I'm a huge cat person.. I love them more than anything... I know how it feels to lose your cat.. to be the owner of a run over kitty.. You're SO angry at the drive..
But now i know what it feels like to be the one who hits the cat too.>ITs a horrible feeling.. I feel just sick....

On my way home for lunch, I'm going to see if I can pick him up.. thats if he's still there. I'll find a box here at work.. get an old towel or use this Carter Bloodcare Tshirt thats sitting my desk... wrap him up.. maybe I'll take him home and bury him. I just don't know what to do..
I'm so gutted inside..

Its been very hard keeping my eyes dry here at work... I wish I could just go home and hug my cats.. tell them I'm sorry..

I am so sorry. What a horrible thing to happen. It doesn't sound as if he suffered. I hope he is still there when you go back so you can put some closure to this for yourself. Please use something like the shirt to pick him up with so you don't get any ringworm or anything to take to your kitties at home. Hugs, I am so sorry you have to go through this. Becky

Thank you becky. *hugs*
We have a first aid box here at work with some gloves inside. I'll probably grab a pair of those.. I don't know if I can make it through the day here at work. I don't know if I'll be able to gather enough strength to come back after lunch..

I'm so sorry that this happened.

I've never hit a cat but I did hit a bunny once and I felt like I was going to throw up in the car. It isn't a good feeling at all.

*hugs*!!!!

It wasn't your fault. If he's not there, please don't be too upset. The owner may have found him.
I hit a dove once. He flew right in front of my windshield. I had no clue he was headed that way. Accidents happen, unfortunately.

aaawww, that's got to be horrible. IT was an accident. Accidents do happen. It never makes US feel better though. I understand what you mean, I can imagine how horrible I would feel if I killed an animal of anykind. Especially like a cat. I'm so sorry.

Becky, I on my way home I saw the poor little guy on the side of the road still.
I put on latex gloves, picked him up and he was stiff as a board..I put him in a white trash bag, then in a box and then another big bag when I got home.
He looked very peaceful laying there tho.. I cried all the way home in the car.

But I feel some closure after everything...

You did not do it intentionally, and if you heard two noises underneath, it is likely he didn't suffer. Even if you looked back and he was moving, it could have been the nerve endings, as they keep going even in death. There was nothing you could have done.

It is an awful thing to happen, but not your fault. They move so fast, sometimes. But have you thought of trying to find an owner, if there is one? Putting up a notice near where it happened might help, or telling the local vets and shelters. Once I had a cat run over in the middle of the night, and the person who did it phoned me (he was wearing a tag). She had taken him to an emergency vet and I would never have known without her call. I was so grateful for her courage in telling me. There is as we all know nothing worse than not knowing what has happened to your pet.

I Know... God, do I know... I've been down that road a lot growing up with animals.
On my way home for lunch, I picked him up.... No tags.. no nothing.. there wasn't anyone or any house around.. this was in the country.

No one had picked up the poor little guy... so did it instead. I got a box, some trash bags and a Tshirt here at work to wrap him up in before hand... I couldn't leave him there on the side of the road..

I wish there had been more I could do but the cat was dead... I think i killed him instantly. He looked very peaceful on the road though..
It just broke my heart today...

Thank you for your concerns *hugs* You have beautiful kitties.

"I hope someone here can understand where I'm coming from."

Yes, I did the same thing about 7 or 8 years ago. You're so right, you don't have a chance to avoid them, this one ran literally straight under my wheels. I didn't have time to even think about stopping, never mind actually doing so. I was too scared at first to get out of the car because of what horrors I might find. When I did get out I couldn't find him anywhere, he must have run off. I looked around for him, but there was a wood to the left, the direction in which he had been travelling and I daren't go in there in the dark alone.

I abandoned where I was going to and went back home and fetched my father and a torch and together we searched in the woods. We never did find him and I never knew what happened to him. I've always hoped he wasn't that badly injured, but I know he could have run off injured to die alone. I'll never know.

But it is horrible and everyone assumes that when their cat is killed on the road it's done by a speeding motorist who just doesn't care. That's not always the case. Nor does it help to tell youself it wasn't your fault. You still feel like a killer, I know I did.

The unavoidable is just that - UNAVOIDABLE. It was that little kittie's "time", if you know what I mean. I'm of the school of belief that everything happens for a reason and that good things come out of every situation. We often never know what that good thing was, but it's there and it happens. The fact that you went back for the little kittie speaks volumes for your character. And now that little cat will never be forgotten. Maybe he was just looking for some way to have a little love. You gave it to him today by treating him with dignity and respect. I have a feeling that you just might meet up with him again someday.

I could not have said it any better, one day at RB you will see the little guy running to you, for you gave him love when he needed it most~

LeosMum, I'm so sorry you've had this awful experience, but you mustn't blame yourself -- they dart so fast, you just don't have a chance. It seems as if it was fast, though, and the little guy likely didn't suffer, and you have treated him with dignity and love. He's at the Bridge now, and every kitty you've ever known is telling him all about the wonderful human they knew, that he'll eventually get to meet himself. So snuggle lots with Leo and let him help you through this sad time, and please be gentle with yourself.
