So how did everyone sleep??? Nice ocean air? This morning, we're trekking over the to the Tulips fields of the Skagit Valley. This is a lower, flat area (flat? impossible here!
) right up at the border of our state and Canada. The tulips grown here supply almost 30% of world tulip export.
GOOD MORNING!!

Oh! A shooting star over the valley early today!

We're just about to hop a helicopter over the montains to Eastern Washington. It's a desert out there!

She's at it again! Gorgeous, Elizabeth! I'll be smiling all morning. See you all later -- don't get lost in the tulips!

I am so hungry! Let's stop at the fresh fish market before we catch the helicopter to Eastern Washington! Here in the Western Washington area there are lots of places that will pop you out a fresh salmon sandwich or tempura halibut (YUMMY) at a moment's notice. Many of the fish stands offer samples for free, like salmon spreads, halibut pate, stuff like that. Just say the words "fresh crab!" and you can find any number of street vendors who will clean it and hand it to you right here for eating!

Let's go! We're off to Eastern Washington where we'll slow the pace down a bit with a wonderful train ride....it's very arid and dry there, a completely different place.. you'll see!

Taking helicopters over the mountains is very popular here, and Mt. St. Helens has turned herself into big business.

This is how she looked before the blast in 1980:

...and the blast itself that morning. I heard it.

5 million trees flattened in a moment, life was extinguished everywhere in a 30 mile radius. Many lives were lost. The morning after:

Now, as she is today without the temper tantrums....

....and life has returned to the area 25 years later, but slowly. Nature is amazing, it rebuilds but leaves tell-tale signs of history if you pay attention.

Wow, those pictures are almost surreal! I happened to be in Washington state then. My mother in law at the time lived in Shelton! It was something to see.

No kidding Susie! Well heck you're practically a native Washingtonian.

WOW, Shelton is so close (readers: about 60 miles from the dead-zone) and did she get ash? We had only ash flurries in Seattle, as it blew east over the mountains into eastern WA and the opposite direction, but knew that Vancouver (WA) and Portland to the south in Oregon got their share of ash! I was fishing on the Cowlitz River this summer and it's just so pristine and gorgeous now.... you cannot tell it was annihilated and the fish got killed and it looked like all the flattened areas above. The eagles are back, too!
Was your MIL ok???? Were you ok??? Did you hear it? Did you have to wear an ash mask for a week?

I got there alittle later after it blew, so no, and to tell you the truth, Dave and I divorced not long after, so I don't know if she and her family had to be tested or not!
