Daniele, how many of the islands are actually habitated? And what is the rough population of this area? Do people live here year around and is tourism huge, I suppose it is, but what does everyone do for a living if not in the hotel and snorkle business? Why was Queensland never really that developed compared to NSW?
not many of them are habited - some are resorts only (sorry I dont know the percentage) and some are owned by individuals (and they actually live there) other than that they are not habitated at all.

yes people life there all year round - as i said my best friend lives there - her husband is british and they have been there about 3 years - they are in the sailing industry. Property prices arent as high as expected actually and I have been trying to convince chris to buy up there because it will skyrocket within years.

quote from a website
"The Whitsunday Shire is a fast growing Region basking in the superb, tropical climate of North Queensland. With an area of 2644 square kilometres and an approximate resident population of 15,200, the Whitsunday Shire is a major tourist destination in Australia"

I cant answer the question about the development of queensland - but i believe it is getting bigger

Are there areas like that in the Phillipines, Yayi?
All I can say is that it's such a refreshing contrast to America. Here, pepole went through generations of land-grabbing, homesteading, and corporate greed so few, if any, areas are no longer uninhabited. There are parts of Montana and in the Tennessee and West Virginia areas that aren't and in Michigan's upper peninsula, which is breathtaking, but that's all. Nothing really like this - it belongs to Florida!

ok it is way past pumpkin time here, so I have to get some sleep. I have a massage at 9 am. poor me LOL. I have no doubt that tomorrow the JET will be ready....probably released from the Australian government due to all that contraband Gordo smuggled in......

Wow - we caught you all up! We got left behind in Melbourne, so thank goodness for the carpet. We did a quick swoop round Ayers Rock so we would know what you were all talking about, but Persil insisted on trying to use the camera and dropped it over the side. At least I only let her have the instamatic! I have the digital one safe. Ellie was so tired she just slept on my lap all the way.

Ok, we made it to the yacht. The girls want to know if they can swim and catch fish on the Great Barrier Reef, or is that forbidden, even for cats, as they are now trying to preserve it?

I don't think I will be able to make them understand that they can look but not touch! I will just leave them on the boat with a good supply of tuna juice and fish treats while I take my first scuba dive. What are others going to do with their kits? Shall we club together and get them a banquet while we swim?
