I was just holding Archimedes (3 months old) and saw that he had a flea or two crawling on him. He got him from the shelter a week ago, and thinking he may have gotten them there. I am curious as to what would be the best course of action to rid these foul creatures...

I know that flea collars aren't the best for kittens could choke, and the fact that they just don't work in general! I'm also curious to what people think of Hartz products (as I have heard that are sometimes very harmful). Would Frontline or Advantage be best? Or perhaps just a wash with flea shampoo and clean the carpet do?

Any advice is most welcomed!

Thanks,
Rayne and Archimedes

PLEASE do not use Hartz. The products can harm your pet, and even (sadly) do more than that. It is not safe to use.

Call your vet and ask for kitten flea treatment, frontline and put it on your kitty. Then you can buy powdered Borax, sprinkle it in your carpet, let it sit about 20 minutes and vacuum it up.

Thank you Hissy! I had read that Borax is good for the carpet! Frontline, eh? Alright.

And its a shame that such a widely used product-line should be so harmful! I had heard soemthing about them earlier but didn't know how much weight the article actually held. Thanks for the reaffirmed heads-up.

Also, when you sweep your carpet, if you have a sweeper with a beg, remove it and take it outside to throw it away. Any flea eggs that you swept up will hatch within 10 days and reinfest your house. You should repeat this at least 2-3 times. Also, throughly wash anything that kitty slept on. I also agree that Frontline is the best product to use. Be sure to get it from your Vet's office and not a online store. It only has the guarantee if you get it from your vet. That is true with any product such as heartworm prevention, flea prevention etc..

Hi Rayne,

I like Revolution and Frontline. Revolution works best with my cats (roundworms, fleas, mites, etc. all gone!), while Frontline works well with our dogs.
Hope this helps!

I live in flea country and just treat with Advantage. In the warmer months, although it was 80 today, I treat monthly and then in the winter only if I see a flea. I have never treated the carpet and with the Advantage alone I haven't seen any fleas for months. Years, actually. But I treat in the summer anyway. My vet did tell me that in some areas the fleas are resistant to Advantage and then they need to use Frontline, but here it is still effective. Revolution also works, although there is more of a chance of skin reactions with it. Your vet needs to have seen the kitten and have a current weight to be able to tell you the exact amount of flea drops to use. I reiterate Hissy's warning about the Hartz, or any over the counter flea treatment, they are dangerous and not very effective anyway. Becky

Is it alright to put the borax on the carpet with the kittens 4 months old in the room?
