I have a neutering question. I have 3 kitties and my first 2 were neutered when we got them so we have never had the neuter experience. My new kitten, whom we've had for a month, who is 5 months old is getting neutered in a couple of days. My other 2 kitties are great kitties but they are not lap cats or cuddle cats, not even as kittens. They are affectionate but in their individual ways. My new baby is a total lap cat and cuddler and I don't want that to change. I love all their personalities and each has something special to offer but I would be so very sad if I didnt have at least one cuddler.
We are loving this lap cat experience. So my question is; do you think the neutering experience will change that? I'm sure it is a bit traumatic for them, at least to some degree. What are peoples' experiences with that? Thanks all!

No, he won't change his basic personality. He will calm down a little if the hormones have started affecting him, but at five months old that is not likely. No, he will be just as much of a lap kitty as ever. Boys don't seem to notice much that they even had the surgery. I think that they think that they just dozed off for a moment at the vet and when they woke up their bum ached a little, but not enough to pay attention to. That seems to be how my boys reacted, anyway. They were back to normal the same evening, although the vet always warns that it may take 24-48 hours for the anesthesia to wear completely off. Becky

Not neutering him will over time turn him aggressive, and you will not be able to cuddle him at all. They sleep through the procedure, shake it off in 24 hours and go on with their life.

Loki has always been friendly. And we did get him fixed. he was out like a light. Than just had to shake off the meds. He was a little stiff for a day but other than that the little guy was AOK. And a HAPPY BOY

Our babies were cuddlers as kittens, we got them both desexed at 4 months and they didn't change personality at all - just calmed down ever so slightly.

My boyfriends female cat Kinks was a rather nasty cat before she was fixed. Attacking, and biting and scratching for no realy reason. Growling at people all the time. Afterwards, she became totally sweet and loves to lay on us while we are sleeping. Although, it turned out that she had cysts in her ovaries that we found while she was being spayed (i got to watch) and the vet pointed them out to me. So maybe she was in pain before hand.

I have seen similar things with male cats at the shelter I work at so if anything, I would say the cat is likely to be more affectionate. My one male kitten I had neutered at 11 or 12 weeks so he was never even close to developing any weird male behaviors.

Oh wow, you got to watch! I would like to be there when my kitty gets spayed, did you just ask to watch or would that be intrusive of me?
I'm glad your kitty is all better now though. That was a good catch.

Well my Lewis is now a neutered cat and all went well. Although, I have no idea how to keep a 5 month kitten calm like the vet told us.
We kept him in our room with the door closed last night just so he could remain, "calm." Well, I woke up so many times with the loudest purring and the sound of "bouncing" cat. He was up the bed, down the bed, running around and just having a grand old time. I've let him out to be with the rest of the family and put him in the room for quiet time throughout the day. He's as good as new but I am keeping my eye on him so he doesn't get too rambuncious. Anyway, my earlier question was how and if he would change. Well, he was such a sweetie to begin with and I could swear he purrs louder and is even more cuddly. Amazing! I didn't think it would be that way as he was still a kitten. Perhaps he was already getting to be a manly kitty. Maybe he's just so happy to be home...he was so cute when he got home. He came out of his kennel and he purred soooo loud and was so cuddly, I thought he would be a little aloof at fist. We've all noticed that he is more cuddly today.
So all is wonderful and well.

My kittens were done yesterday too, and I was told to "limit exercise" and give them peace and quiet!!! Some chance! Well they were racing about the house as soon as we got them home, they woke us in the night "fighting" on our bed and they have continued to be just as lively this morning. Obviously no one has told them that they have had an op and should be feeling groggy. I'm sure they'll be just as cuddly as they were before, but so far they haven't stopped moving long enough for us to find out.

It was a mobile clinic that came to my shelter and she put up such a fight and screamed sooo loud she had to be pinned down in a net so it drew my attention and then I realized it was my cat making such a fuss. I was looking in through the window to see how she was doing and they said I could come in as long as I could handle seeing them cut her stomach open to do the surgery. I said I have always wanted to see it and she actually explained everything she was doing and showed my how to do it and what part is removed. It was very interesting. You could always ask your vet. They might have policies against that though. I just can't get over how different she was immediately afterwards. It is amazing how sweet she is now. And she was a terror before hand. I really bet she was in pain maybe from the cysts. My sister actually gets cysts in her ovaries and she has had surgery and stuff and she said it is very painful sometimes so maybe it is similar.
