I chose the name Patches for Patches because she is an all black cat but she has a big spotch of white on her upper middle
.... Plus she has bits of white on her paws.

The half-kid is named Tiger because my housemate was watching golf and she named her Tiger after Tiger Woods the golfer

As a kitten, my cat used to get just everywhere...as all kittens are wont to do. Sometimes I couldn't figure out how she got somewhere, like the time I found her hanging by her collar from a hangar in my closet (scared the life out of me, and was the end of a collar for her!). So, initially, she was "Abracadabra", shortened to "Abbie".

When I got my foster litter last summer, I got all literary:

Boo Radley: he was quite shy of people at first. (To Kill a Mockingbird)
Daisy Faye Buchanan: a femme fatale (The Great Gatsby)
Philip (Pip) Pirrup: my runty boy (Great Expectations)
Ernest Hemingway: big and bold! (Author, obviously)
Romeo Montague: a lover, fond of kisses (Romeo and Juliet)

My feral kittens:

Scout: love this name, but I can't take credit, though, his meowmy named him
Briar: It just fit him. Initially he was kind of "thorny", but so, so pretty.
Buttercup: From The Princess Bride, and it went well with Briar.

Dutchy was nammed because of her tail, its a "Nubbin" as we say. And my favourite movie has a character with a Nubbin finger, and his name was Dutchy

Loki...because he is a mischief maker

Jellie and Bellie because they were fighting over a Jellie Bellie bag one night when I came home..

Droideka - Starwars
Mojo - came with that name

Queaky - his full name is Chairman Meow Tsqueak Tung and was Squeaky for short since he was a very vocal kitten. It turns out he's afraid of the "S" noise and thinks you're hissing at him so he's now 'Queaky!

Keebler - I was having trouble picking a name for this little tiny kitten and a friend suggested that she was elf-like. He just started saying words and names associated with elves and when he said "Keebler" I knew that was it.

Tibby and Molly both chose their own names!! Tibby began as Tybalt (although that is still his full name 'The Prince of Cats' from Romeo and Juliet), then Tibs and now Tibby!! Molly began as Miffy, but decided she liked the sound of Molly better!!

I called out a couple of names and they responded to the ones of their choice and then we narrowed them down!!

My first cat was called Disco, as when she found us - as a kitten - she used to stare through our patio doors and her eyes looked like disco lights changing colour!!

Cairo cos she's got a bit of Abby in her and has a very angular, Sphinxy-looking face.

Sunday cos, well, we got her on Sunday.

Scratchy kind of speaks for itself I think! Took me a couple of weeks to name her but in the end there was no other choice. Mum hates it - calls her Smudge instead (which kind of suits her too) but Scratchy it is!

What a great thread!

Summer - She was called this at the shelter I got her from. I liked it, plus she was called this for 15 months while she was there, so she knew it well.

The cats at home:

Peanut - named after my late brother's cat. My Grandma says the name suits her because she has a brown spot all around her mouth and looks like she was eating in a jar of peanut butter! LOL

Crazy Cat - Doesn't the name speak for itself? LOL. She was a rather precocious kitten....tearing apart lampshades, and the house in general. After my Grandpa saw this he always said "That cat's crazy!"...hence the name.

Snickers - when he was a kitten he had chocolate (deep dark brown), caramel (red) and gray (nougat) colors in his fur.

Dusty - she's solid gray & furry; looks like a walking dust-mop.

Zorro - wears a mask on his face; also in June 1998 when I first laid eyes on my boy, "The Mask of Zorro" was the most popular movie.

Hamtaro - my daughter named him after the cartoon hamster, "Hamtaro" on Cartoon Network. He acts like the hamster, too... adventurous, curious, and loooovvvving.

Miss Jessie - one of my favorite songs is about 'painting a picture of how it's gonna be, living in a trailer by the sea... you, the cat & me...'

Miss K.C. - "Kitty Cat" was a stray who is so tiny, she still looks like a kitten even tho she's 12 yrs old.

Greetings everyone! I was a member of this board awhile ago, and now I'm back.
I have a new ball of fur named Archimedes! He's a 3 month old cream tabby who gets into everything. My other cat, is a grey female named Ashley who is currently in California, as I am in the process of moving to Indiana. Once everything is situated, Ashley is coming here to join Chris, Archimedes and I.

Blessings,
Rayne

Its good to be back.
I took some pictures of Archimedes when we first got him, but haven't used up that roll of film yet...as soon as I do, I'll make sure to post some.
He's a cutie.

My current cats are/were named after computer components... Pixel, Mouse & Cable. i had a hard time coming up with Cable's name. i considered CD-Rom, Reboot, Modem... then about 2 weeks after i named her, i thought of Links! so that'll probably be the name of my next kitty (probably far in the future!). i'm thinking of switching to literary names, tho, because there're so many more to choose from!

My first cat, a tortoiseshell, was named Medley, because she was a medley of colors.
her companion cat, pointed Siamese-like mix, was named Smoke.

The ferals began with old possum's book of pratical cats names, but i've run out of the ones i liked!
O.C. (outside cat!) her kittens Jennyanydots, Grizabella, Mr. Mistoffelees & Griddlebone
a male hanger-on, Mungojerrie - originally had a female companion, Rumpleteaser but i've not seen her in a long time.
Jennyanydots left, but came back about 6 months later with 2 adolescents, Snowshoe & Frost (both pointed)
Griddlebone & Grizabella had kittens this summer (i think) that are now my current residents - most of the others don't come around anymore. these 4 are named Piglet, Pooh, Tigger & Eyore.
There was a large, friendly blue cat coming around who still shows up occasionally - i think she belongs to someone. i call her Moonshadow. she sometimes comes with a friend who resembles her... i call the friend Raincloud.
i wish i could afford to have the ferals neutered...but i can't. i also don't have any way to catch them. i've called all over, but i live in a little town & there's no one around who does TNR in my area...

Cupcake is black and white (like a tuxedo - black back, white chest and tummy), so we were thinking of things that were black and white which might work as a name. Hubbs came up with Cupcake since Hostess cupcake's have chocolate icing and white filling. We knew it was the right name the minute he said it. Cupcake takes herself *very* seriously, but is really just a softie at heart. It's funny that my very very serious cat who walks around glaring at everyong has a such a sweet name.

Since she's a stray I always wondered what her original name was. I was making hummus on day and said we were out of tahini (sesame paste) and Cupcake jumped up and started meowing. Everytime I'd say the word she'd look up and make a sound. I played around with it and finally figured out that her name must have been Tiffany (because who would name a cat 'Tahini'??). Pesonally, I think Cupcake suits her better, but then I'm biased.

Oreo- i named him when i was eight, he is not even black and white lol, i have no idea what i was thinking.

Zeus- my family was on a Xena warrior princess thing at the time, zeus should be oreo since he is black and white, and oreo should be zeus.

Mittens- well she has white paws! so it was pretty easy naming her, we were also thinking about calling her socks, but i thought it sounded more like a boy name.

just for fun my other pets:

Frodo(guinea pig)- we really like lord of the rings!

Two-tail(fish)- he is a fantail goldfish and there tail looks like two regular goldfish tails togather so i named him two tail.

Gilgalad(betta)- lord of the rings thing also, pretty much my dad's idea, i thought it worked because of the Gil part of the name since it was a fish.

Living in the land of not enough time
My room mate named Hoboken(RB) cause she thought the name sounded cool.

Shalimar(RB) was named by my sister who owned her for a few months before she had to move and I got her.

Frantic named himself when he was franticly trying to dig thru the bottom of the litter pan shortly after he came home.

Pipsqueek is Frantic's litter brother. For the first year of their life, Pip was smaller than Frantic by about 2" and 5lbs. He's still the shorter of the 2, but he weighs about the same.

When we brought our first cat home, a little bundle of grey and white fuzz, we didn't like the name she had before ("grizou"... which is like calling her "grey"), so we changed it to Kermitte (like Kermit the frog, but since the kitten was female, we added "te" at the end!)... but honestly, I can't remember why we chose that name!

When I came home with our second kitty, I already knew he was a male, and had some orange on him. With a spunky personality, and in keeping with the Sesame Street theme, we decided to call him Elmo!
