My mom and sister went to see Zipper at the vet today, they noticed that he has icterus (yellowing of the skin) and that he is not very responsive at all. He still won't eat and he is extremely weak.
The vet didn't say anything about the icterus, but my mom looked it up on the internet and found out that it usually shows up due to internal bleeding or something is wrong with his liver.

I worry alot because Zipper was a perfectly healthy, energetic and playful cat. Since his neuter, everything went downhill. I don't want to ask this, but is it it possible that the vet made a mistake when he was neutering Zipper? I just don't know what else to think. I will be going to see Zipper for tomorrow, I pray that he doesn't have a disease or something that is going to kill him...

Tasha, I'm so sorry to hear that Zipper still isn't doing well. I'll keep him in my thoughts, and you as well. It's really impossible to say whether the vet made a mistake or not, since an infection might have set in because Zipper "worked on" his incision. The yellowing of his skin may be due to his not eating for several days; there's a condition called "hepatic lipidosis" that can be caused by anorexia. Here's a link: http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/in...ic%2clipidosis

Your vet should be able to IV 'feed' Zipper enough to keep the caloric content high enough to prevent hepatic lipidosis. If he is still just force feeding him, ask him about putting him on an IV - it isn't really food, but it accomplishes the same thing -as a temporary situation, and should also include the vitamins and minerals that he needs.

One question to ask the vet - is it possible he had a delayed reaction to the anaesthetic? The reason I ask is that my cat Abbie had an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic during her spay that affected her liver. The vet caught it quickly, but didn't think she would survive since the liver started to bleed spontaneously. Now that happened right during and after the surgery so I don't think it would be the same for Zipper, however I wonder if there could be some other similar reaction that has affected his liver function. Anyway, these are just suggestions. Has the vet suggested doing a blood panel to see how his body is coping? If he is showing icterus, that might be another thing to check out.

I do hope that Zipper starts to respond positively soon to all of the good vibes, energy and care that is being sent his way, and becomes his lively and healthy self again soon.

The vet phoned today to tell us that Zipper was slipping away. He died before we got to the vet. Zipper had hepatic lipidosis, caused by not eating for so many days. The vet gave him a shot of vitamins and some oxygen, but unfortunately, he didn't make it. Me and my sister went and gave Zipper our goodbyes and told him that he is now free from pain and will enjoy his new life over the bridge. It was hard seeing Zipper like that, lifeless and cold yet he looked peaceful.

The vet asked if we would like an autopsy done to see why he died, but I said no. I am assuming that is because the vet wasn't 100% sure that it was fatty liver disease, I don't think he did any blood work, not to my knowledge anyways. Is it possible that it was FIP or FIV? Zipper was a feral, found in a bush with his mother. Luckily, Peppurr and Zeus were vaccinated against those diseases.

Zipper will be remembered in our hearts, he will never be forgotten. Thank you to everyone for all of your kind thoughts and prayers. I really appreciate it.

Zipper,

A heart of gold stopped beating,
two shining eyes at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove,
He only takes the best.

God knows you had to leave us,
but you did not go alone,
for part of us went with you,
the day He took you home.

To some you are forgotten,
to others just part of the past,
but to us who loved and lost you,
the memory will always last.

Goodbye my sweet angel, I love you and will always be with you...

Oh, Tasha, I'm so very sorry you lost your precious Zipper. This is so tragic that he would be taken from you so suddenly. You did everything you could and provided him the best of care. I'm glad you realize he is in perfect health now, happy, and playing in Heaven, knowing just how much you love him. You are in my prayers at this painful time.
