This is not a be all or end all question, just wondering if anyone knows why Franz is doing this? Franz about 9 or 10 in age 19 lbs, neutered and very well behaved does the following, he has been doing this ritual for about 6 weeks. I come home from work, Franz and Maddie greet me at the door, Franz runs to his scatching post, scratches for about 10 seconds and returns to me still near the door and greets me again. Whats with the hit and run greeting, then to scratching post ritual? It is cute to see.

I don't have any idea, but Franz sounds really cute. My Oliver scratches shoes for a greeting.

Oh my word, I'm so glad you posted this - my Baylee does this too! It's almost obsessive-looking and definitely terretorial seeming... like I'm glad you're home, good to see you... THIS, however, is mine!

That's all I can get out of it... anyone know the real answer?

Barbara Rosie and Sophie do that as well
I usually think their thinking " wooo hoooo mums, back i'm so happy!!!" *claw, claw, claw, claw, claw"*

That might be their way of jumping up and down with excitement?!

My Wallace does this too. He scratches when he's excited but he also scratches when he's mad at us....this is quite funny. Whenever we say no to him, or if he tries to get out and we shut the door (he's an outdoor cat wannbe), or for whatever reason he can't have his way, he goes immediately to his scratching spot (we use the cardboard kind which my cats love) and furiously scratches. He runs to the scratcher, scratches with the utmost intensity and then.... all is well. He is so gentle with us but you know that he gets ticked at us as he is so consistent in this behavior. It's funny as all get out but at the same time I guess you would say he is getting out his frustration in an appropriate manner...perhaps some people would do well by having a scratching post when they are mad or frustrated.

There's no place like home
Mine sometimes jump on the scratch post when they are excited - whether that be excited to see me, excited that they are about to get their daily meat treat, or just excited for play. You're right - it is terribly cute!!

Perhaps they are just missing you a bit more lately - have you changed any routines?

LOL...glad Franz is not the only one! Susan I love the idea of that being their way of jumping up and down...makes sense. Wouldn't be a riot if they could, you would burst an artery laughing!

When Sophie was only a couple of months she would try and catch her tail but she did it in mid air!, so that would always crack me up laughing.

My sister had to have her dog put to sleep so because she was upset i was feeling a bit flat as well
but it was as if Sophie knew because she came and did it right beside me and i couldn't help but smile

Valtteri used to try to claw my legs when I got home, not scratching but still not pleasant. I did get him to stop but now he tries to rip the carpet to pieces when I come home. He has his eyes half closed and he just claws and claws. I guess he's really happy then.

Simon doesn't scratch. He does jump up and down. The others just look up from their nap, and wander over and rub against my legs (except for Pengy...she just pokes her head up from inside the condo...that's her current greeting. And it's sweet...)

And yes, it's very funny to see Simon pretend to be a Jack Russell Terrier....

Best-
Michele
