Okay, my kitten, Lola (5 months) is a big garbage thief. She'll steal anything that she can get out of the garbage. Well, at first it was cute, but now it's NOT. I keep my garbage covered (as is the one in the bathroom and the one in the kitchen) but I have several roommates. Today I found Lola choking on a condom she had found in one of their rooms. He had covered his garbage, but she knocked the cover off. I can't just lock the poor thing in my room, but I don't trust them to keep their doors closed and their garbages well covered all the time. Any suggestions on what I can do?

Replace all the garbage cans in your apartment (including the ones in your roommates' rooms) with the metal kind with the lid hinged to the can and a pedal to open it. Those are the only kind I have found that the kitties can't get into. They are obviously more expensive than plastic garbage cans, but you need to do something before Lola gets into something poisonous--or chokes on something when no one is around to help her.

I second the motion for getting rid of the roommates. Choking on a CONDOM?!? Good Lord.

You can get those hinged, ultra heavy (stainless steel) garbage cans from Kohls or Target or anywhere, really... I think they are weighted at the bottom and there isn't a way for the cats to get in there.

You could also recommend to your roommates to put the condoms or other icky things into paper bags and crumple it up tightly, before throwing into the garbage?

Those are exactly the ones I was talking about...

You know, you might want to keep a close eye on Lola today. Not to be gross or anything, but if the condom was treated with spermicide, I suppose it could make her sick... Wow, that really is icky.

A condom?!? Do you want me to come out there???!!! How old are these bozos?!? Seriously, dump the roommates and care for your poor kitty.
Now, are these roommates paying you directly or? And can you call a house meeting to talk about garbage?
and yes, keep an eye on your kitty, Stefanie is really keen to pick up on that......I do hope she'll be ok.

I have been keeping an eye on her and she's fine. Being her usual self. I can't get rid of the roommates, because I'm subletting from them and I can't afford to live alone. In fact, I can't afford the garbages you guys are talking about, although I appreciate the suggestion (I have a total of $12 to last me until the end of the month and that includes groceries). Don't be too mad at my roommate, though, guys....he did cover his garbage when I told him about her garbage thief tendencys, but she's clever and found a way in anyhow....I guess we'll just have to put our textbooks on top of the garbage and close the doors. Thanks for the paper bag suggestion, darkeyedgirl...we'll try that too.
