It's too bad you can't install Service Pack 2 on your computer. I have no idea why. Do you have any clue?
Do you (or anybody) happen to know if the SP2 firewall works with McAfee's firewall? Meaning, can you run them simultaneously? I used it for awhile in conjunction with Agnitum's OutpostPro, and there weren't any problems until Agnitum did an update that made it incompatible with my anti-virus software (G-Data
), so I switched to McAfee, which AOL provides for free (at least here). I haven't tried running the latter together with SP2's yet, as I'm afraid of what might happen.

Well... reading these last three replies, I think I'm going to sound dumber as we reply back and forth, but what the heck.
I've got some ideas, but I'm going to try not to jump ahead. My first question is:

1. Did you get an error message when you tried to install Service Pack 2 with Automatic Update?

2. If you got an error message, do you get the exact same error message when you try to install with the CD?

3. Do you have, (at the very least) both Ad-aware SE Personal
and Spybot S&D?

I use Spybot, but my computer has really been running slow even with running this everyday. Could you guys please give me some of the links for some of these other anti-spyware programs? Maybe these other programs would help?
Sure no problem.

Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05: (for other people reading) http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
Scroll down and click on one of the download mirrors. download.com is usually good.

Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Scroll down. You only need to click on the first link under "Download"

For other people reading, we're not trying to do this all at once. Stephanie, my first question for you is:

1. When you run Ad-aware, does the "Ignore List" indicate anything other than "0"?

Your computer may or may not be in deep, so next I may be suggesting also downloading Hijack This and perhaps other programs. We'll see.

2. What anti-virus program do you use?

3. When was the last time you updated it?

It will work with Service pack 2 installed, but it is not recommended that you use them both at the same time. If you prefer the Mcaffee Firewall, you can easily disable the Microsoft Firewall to avoid any possible conflicts. After the install you will have a "Security Center" as well as the "Windows Firewall" in the Control Panel. You can disable it through the Security Center or more simply through the Windows Firewall icon. This is mainly for people who prefer other thrid party firewalls such as Mcaffee or Norton.

Thank you for your help!

Okay, that's a long time to go without an update. If you are still allowed free updates, download the latest one and run it. If you don't have any free updates left, purchase more, or... uninstall it. Then go here (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl7.php) and download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. Install and also update it before running it.

Did you also update Ad-aware before you ran it?

If you had anything in the Ignore List:

1. Click on Open Ignore List.
2. Configure the list so that it is not ignoring anything. Ask me if you're not sure.

By the way, the next time you do run Ad-aware:

1. Click on Start.
2. Click on Customize.
3. Change any red X's to green checkmarks. Don't worry about the grey X's.
4. The next run will give a more thorough scan, which won't hurt.

I have Service Pack 2 too and it hasn't caused any problems at all for me.

Just a recommendation for those with spyware and virus checkers, update them at least once a week. I do mine every 2 days.

No problem. Reply back to the thread when you have the time, whether it's today or not. I'll subscribe to this thread, so you won't get left out. We'll have that computer running slick as a dog's... ummm... tongue.
(Or however that saying goes.)

Nice! That's as high as I've found on computers of friends and family. You'll be sure to notice less lag when operating your computer when you get rid of them. I forgot to ask you if you are using a firewall. If you don't have one I highly recommend the free version of ZoneAlarm. (www.zonelabs.com) That will help prevent some future problems. Did Ad-aware ask you if you wanted to re-scan upon the next start up? If so I assume you did that, but it's possible that it didn't get rid of everything and a few things might come up in the scan again even though you would have selected them to be removed on the last scan.

In any case, your results were high, so I suggest downloading Hijack This. (www.tomcoyote.org/hjt) It's a super small program at a mere 193kb.

1. Download Hijack This.
2. Right-click on the zip file and select "extract to hijack this" (it's own folder)
3. Simply drag that folder to some other folder where you would remember it to be if you don't want it sitting on your desktop, or wherever you first downloaded it to.
4. Open the folder and double-click on the exe to run it.
5. Select "Do a system scan and save a log file". Scanning only takes a second.

6. When it shows you the save window for the log file it should default to the same folder the exe is in. Click save.
7. The saved log file will open right up. You can select, copy and paste the results here, or pm them to me. Or... you can just close the log. It's saved in the Hijack This folder, so you can just send it another time.
8. Hijack This itself is still open.
9. If you know your stuff you can select and delete keys, but I would suggest doing step seven. I can tell you what to delete and why.
10. Scream and panic! (just kidding
)

Wow, just with Ad-aware so far, I am absolutely amazed how quickly my computer is moving!
I didn't realize just how slow it had become! This is fantastic! It's just going to be flying by the time I do all of your other recommendations! Thank you so much for your help!

"adware se"? I'm assuming you meant "Ad-aware SE". Am I correct? There is a program out there called "Adware", but it is actually a fake, mailicious program that spies on you. Another one of our members was having trouble removing other spyware because she had this fake program.
