You might be able to get a live trap from a local feed store. I would place his food inside it, with the door locked open until he is comfortable with entering it, maybe a week. Once he is traped, you could get him neutered to keep him from fighting as kitten season will soon be here. Is there a TNR group in your area? They are used to trapping and would return him a much more mellow guy.

Oh, I love him!
Bless you for feeding him! I do hope he returns and you can help to find him a good home. He reminds me so much of my Red Cat, whose hair was also the coursest, most yucky texture I've ever felt on a cat when I got him. And you should see all the scars he has on his chin and his ears from all the fights! (He'd been abandoned by his first family when they moved, then treated as an outdoor cat for a year by a second family.) But with good food and lots of care, his coat ended up nice and soft. Here he is at about 15 pounds and about age six. He's now about nine.

That's a good idea. I can check with the shelter.....they probably know someone who can help trap him. I'll put some more food out this morning before I leave for work so I'll be able to tell if he comes back. I'd definitely need help getting him. I don't think he would even fit in my cat carrier!

I think this is the first time I've ever seen an orange cat with light blue eyes before! That was the first thing that struck me when I saw him.

Well I put food out for him this morning....and it was all gone when I got home. But there was no sign of the big orange boy.

I wonder if I keep putting food out...that will cause him to come around more often and begin to feel more comfortable coming around. I'd love to rescue him if I could.

Any other ideas?

Yes, if you put food out on a routine basis, he will be more likely to visit you more often. That's what happened with me when I lived in a basement apt. ONE WARNING- OTHER cats might come too!
I would recommend you visit the "caring for strays & ferals" section- there's a lot of great info there regarding trapping, taking care of strays, etc.

I saw one cat so I put food out for her and after a month I had 4 "regular" visitors! LOL... At first, I didn't see the cats but in the morning, the food would be gone but after waiting and watching, I saw the cats then I got them used to me slowly by approaching the door closer and closer then they got used to me.

Hope u see him again! You can rent a trap yourself from a shelter-it's really easy to use and at least get him fixed. That will decrease the chances of him getting into fights.. Keep us posted!

I saw him again tonight!!

When I came home from the store, he was sitting on top of the vent cover that is supposed to be keeping the cold air out from under my house. Apparently, he had gotten the vent cover off and had been up under there...probably trying to keep warm. I wonder if he is living under my house now?

Anyway.....I fixed him a big bowl of food and walked around to the front of the house and showed it to him and said, "Come eat....are you hungry?" He willingly followed me to the back porch and ate. He's still not very trusting yet.....and I had to come inside because it was making him too nervous with me watching him eat.

He's just adorable when he looks at me with those big blue eyes!

Yes - that's what happens when you feed 'em but what else do you do???? Poor guy! I want this kitty so bad that seriously if I didn't have 5 and you could catch him I would be driving down.

I know you can't really judge by a photo, but just to look at him he doesn't look all that old, either. Maybe 2-3???

Yeah....that's about what I would guess. He doesn't have that "old man" look yet.....but he does have that "rough living on the streets" look with his notched ears and dull fur. But he has such a sweetness in his face and his eyes.....and purrs so loud.....even though he won't relax enough yet to let me really give him some affection. (he purred that first day when he let me pet him briefly)

Its going to get really cold tonight. I hope that he is trying to stay warm under the house. I'll get up and fix him some more food in the morning. Maybe he'll start trusting me soon.

I could tell by the way he plunged his head into my hand to be petted that first day I saw him......that he's a real lover boy at heart.
He just needs to learn to trust humans again.

Oh Robin, I sure am hoping you can catch that sweetheart soon. And Chris, if you have 5, would 6 make all that much difference. I'd love to have him myself!

I wish six wouldn't make a difference - then I would have my own "Leo"; "Tiggy" or "Hobbes" You don't know what I had to go through to get DH to allow five. Luckily there have been no potty issues or huge fights or I would have been hearing about it. I think someone is watching over me.
