Asking this for a friend who called me today. I don't know how else to phrase it other than specifically.

Can a neutered male ejaculate? My friend said he was rubbing his cat's belly for awhile and ended up with some type of white discharge. It smells, and is possibly from the rear end, which would lead me to believe this is not what he thinks it might be.

What would cause a white discharge from the rear? Not tapeworm. Too much of it.

Any ideas?

Anal glands can produce a bad smelling substance. It is usually a yellowish color, not white. If there is an infection it can be quite foul smelling, but even the normal secretion is not what people would consider pleasant.

also could it be stud tail? Or is that secreted out of the hairs?

Stud tail is from the skin along the top of the tail. The first couple of inches of tail closest to the body. It doesn't have a discharge, just overactive skin glands. It looks like a bad case of cradle cap in babies. The fur on the tail is greasy and the skin has greasy thick dandruff. It doesn't smell bad, unless you get your nose right up there. The overactive sebacious glands can actually get infected, I knew of a male Siamese that actually got little boils there, but no discharge. Becky

So what causes this anal gland secretion? I am told that it has been cleaned up, and there has been no repeat as of yet. Could it be from the overstimulation while rubbing the belly?

Anal gland secretions are a normal part of the kitty communication secretions. I don't know if that is what happened with this kitty, just that it seems more likely than an ejaculation in a neutered guy. If it was foul smelling then I would be almost sure that is what it was. But I don't really know if a neutered cat can ejaculate. Rubbing the belly is not a sexual stimulant in cats, so it seems unlikely to be an ejaculation even if that is possible in neutered cats. And I know that breeders will tell you that neutered cats will attempt to mate, so I guess it is possible that they could ejaculate. Maybe Dr. Doolittle will come along, maybe she knows. Becky

Well, the report is that it was foul smelling. And now, there is tapeworm evidence. So back to the vet he goes. Thanks for all your help, guys.

Herbie went to the vet today, and they kept him, fearing an abscessed anal gland. This afternoon, at pick up, it turns out that there was no abscess and that it was regular anal gland discharge. He is not a happy camper for having spent the day at the vet, as he tends to be skittish, but all in all, the news was good.

Thanks, Becky, for your counsel on this.

It is weird that you can have cats for 50 years and not even be aware that they have anal glands and then along comes a cat that brings it to your attention that they really do have them. I am just glad that people don't. Becky

I don't know. Judging by some of the noxious odors that eminate from my friend, Herbie's owner, I may just have to challenge you on that!
