I have a mother cat and 3 kittens that are 12 weeks old. One of the kittens,
from time to time (too frequently), will urinate on the carpet...even when
the litter box is nearby.

This usually happens a couple of minutes after I let the kittens out of
"their room". I try to let them run around our living room for a little while
each night. It's entertaining for us and good exercize for them.

Any suggestions? It seems to be a problem for only one of the kittens
(one of two males).

While on the subject...are there any particular products that are good
for cleaning cat urine our of carpet. I've just been using water and
a mild detergent.

I would have the vet check. It would seem unlikely that he has a urinary tract infection but that is always the thing that needs to be ruled out. Then if no cause for bladder irritation is found, I would confine him to a small bathroom, probably with a sibling for comfort, and retrain. I would try Cat Attract litter, too, and make sure the litter box is not too high for him to get into in a hurry. And keep the box scrupulously clean, scooping twice a day and totally cleaning and washing at least once a week. After he is perfect in a confined area and you have cleaned the carpet well, I would slowly increase his allowed territory and add litterboxes so he doesn't have far to go. And this all takes place after a veterinarian gets a urine specimen and looks at it under a microscope and does a urine culture if indicated. In people, a urinary tract infection at this age would indicate a need to check out the anatomy of the urinary tract to make sure that the way the ureters insert into the bladder and the anatomy and function of the whole urinary tract is normal, however, I don't know whether cats have these types of problems or not. A vet question.
There are several enzyme cleaners out there. Other people here would have more experience with that than I.
