I have Sateycat's litter box in my room, and although it sometimes gets stinkypoo, it is nothing compared to what little Gus' litter smells like. When we first got him he was on Iams food. I smelled the food and it was really strong, and I figured that was what was making his poo smell so horrible, so we've switched him to Neutro Natural Choice which claims to tone down stool odor. This helps, but the difference is marginal. DO you guys think the smelly poo had something to do with high protein content in kitten food or something, and maybe when he gets older and is on adult food his poo will stop smelling so bad? Or is Gus just always going to have really smelly feces?

Well, my 3 guesses would be that neither of the foods agree with him, he is on wet food or he may have worms. I never had a problem with Eukanuba(division of Iams) but I did have a problem with the Nutro and my cats litter box smelling horrible.

I never knew worms could cause their feces to smell bad. He definitely doesn't have worms (the vet never found any but gave him strongid just in case) and we stopped feeding him wet food long ago. Guess it's time to stat switching foods again to find a better one and see if it helps. What a tedious process.

My 11 month old, Mandy has never had stinky poo. Don't know if this is just lucky or if related to her food.

She has been eating APD (Advanced Pet Diet)since 6 wks old. Ate some wet food for couple of months & then the poo had some odor (not much though). Now won't eat any wet food & seems to be doing well.

The APD says it causes less stoo odor so you may want to give it a try. It isn't in supermarket or even at PetCo or PetSmart. Have seen it only at some independent pet stores.

Am told it is one of the highest quality foods & tend to belive it. When Friskies dry is on sale I sometimes supplement her APD with about 1/3 Friskies. It seems to take a bit more of this to satisfy her than when on the straight APD.

Good luck with the stinky poo problem.

my new 7 month old kitties are reallly smelly to. In the beginning it was unbearable. they were on kitten science diet, we changed to a brand called wellness. Worked a little but we still cant stand the smell. Whenever they do thier doodie we have to clean it right after cus we cant stand it. We changed litters to and that helped alot. They also have tons of gas, alot less now than when we first got them, but this brother and sister duo are shoot off silent but deadly ones. Our old kitties Sam and Oliver never farted, their poo smelled bad on occasion, but never one toot came out of them. It must be a genetic thing cus these two definitely do it alot. Im hoping they will grow out of it cus it has declined a bit. But whoo! were stocked on air fresheners.

Definatly have any REALLY stinky poo checked by a vet for coccidia, giardia or worms. Gas and smelly poop is a sure bet for any of these things.

I also wanted to add these.

Gas is produced by the air swallowed, by chemical reactions in our guts & by bacteria living in our guts. There are friendly as well as pathogenic bacteria in intestines. Friendly bacteria prevent the overgrowth of the pathogenic ones. If the friendly bacteria are killed somehow, then "stinky problems" may arise.

Diets rich in proteins & sulfur may cause stinky gases/poop.

Some vegetables & milk can cause gases.

Also maldigestion of some nutrients may cause gases.

Of course it is also possible that some of us have more sensitive noses than others, so even normal stinking may feel unbearable

Do your cats eat very fast & swallop air more ?

Have they ever been treated with antibiotics ? Antibiotics may kill both the pathogenic & the friendly bacteria.

Are the cats free of internal parasites ?

Lactobacillus species of bacteria are good for the intestines. Lactobacillus is present in yogurt for example or there are lactobacillus supplements sold in health stores etc.

Cagney, my 3 year old female, has very mild "poop odor" and never passes gas.
Lily, 7 months old, is much the same, but sometimes slips one by me...I thinks its because she eats faster.
Gilligan, 5 months old, on the other hand, stinks up the house 2 minutes after I change the litter box, and lets out those lovely "silent but deadly" air bisquits if you so much as call his name! I just last week found him a new home, not because of his flatulence! :laughing2: and even though they switched his food, he still has these issues. I'm not sure what they feed him, but they are very concientious people and love him to pieces.

When he was with me, he was fed Nutro MaxKitten, or Nutro NaturalChoice Kitten, both dry, the same as the other cats, and he has been wormed and checked for any illness...I guess he's just a very fragrant cat?

It's too early to tell about the 4 babies, all 6 1/2 weeks, but they are eating Natural Choice, and using the litterbox (usually) and so far so good.

I used to be soooooooo pro Nutro until I adopted my second cat. She has a sensitive tummy and has to be on Science Diet for Sensitive Stomaches. Since I did not want to deal with 2 foods my Guy
literally volunteered and started eating Science Diet on his own, I tried switching him before but he refused to switch. All his soft stool/gas problems went away. He just could not handle what ever ingredient is in Nutro. I am not saying Nutro is bad, but maybe he can't digest a particular ingredient. Why not try another premium quality food and see. Good luck

My kitten used to have really stinky poo, too. Make sure you're using multiple cat litter. I only have one cat, but my vet suggested we use the multiple cat litter. I use Tidy Cat and it works really well. We also switched her cat food to Purina pro plan. She loves it and it causes her not to have to go to the bathroom so much. Hope this helps!

Smelly Cat, smelly cat, what are they feeding you? (sorry it reminded me of that Friends episode.)

I feed my kitten MaxCat and even when I tried others she had smelly poop. She likes the Max Cat Moist best, so that is what she gets. She is healthy. I think it is just the moist stuff. Because now that I am slowly mixing in the dry, it is less stinky.

Every now and then someone has stinky poo & I can't figure out who it is. It is one of the bengals, though. I am guessing either Scooter or Gizmo because they like to eat Fluffy & Cinnamon's adult food.

I have done a lot of research on Probiotics. My understanding is, if no other medical issue or cause can be found that would cause a cat to have digestive and/or intestinal issues, a likely cause could either be an allergy to their food (i.e chicken, beef, corn etc.). OR there is a problem digesting their food and being able to absorb nutrients from their food properly.

Adding a high quality Probiotics can be very beneficial and clear up loss (stinky) stools, vomiting and many more "issues". You can Google Probiotics for felines for more information. "I found "Paw Biotics" on Amazon: "

I have not personally tried this, however it has great reviews and 100% money back guarantee. Good luck!

well i see it this way: your cat is a kitten still. kittens and young mammals digestive systems digest things differently and therefore, their feces has a different smell and odor than full grown mammals. baby poop smells awfull, and, although adult poop smells too, baby poop has a different, stronger odor.

I am using those probiotics that Dodo talks about from Amazon. They really did work wonders for a couple months but now for some reason well I know the reason because I tried to slowly switch my kitten to a sensitive stomach dry food with her regular food and it aggravated her digestion she's never been good with digestion. That's why those probiotics I got from Amazon do help. But with this new dry food change new food a couple tablespoons a day mixed with her regular food just made her have explosive diarrhea four times now I did take a sample to the vet this morning hoping that she can give us some answers. We've had the kitten for five months she turned eight months old today. I can tell she's not feeling well she sleeping Way more than usual. This kitten would hardly ever sleep now that's all she seems to be doing and having gas too, with Very watery stool. The water stool only seems to happen on her regular poop times she's not going all the time thankfully. The probiotics don't seem to be working anymore since I've had her five-months now. I was thinking what if she does have worm Remanence that were not killed all the way & now they grew and grew from when she was a kitten at her parents house? I'm worried about her I hate when things happen like this should've just left her food alone but again she was gassy sometimes anyway she could have a few days where she was fine then there'd be a few days were she wasn't... She was tested for FIP FIV and was negative.
