My Beloved vcr of 12 yrs broke
, I was thinking of getting a vcr , dvd combo . My question is is the combo dvd-vcr, or just the dvd player the same quality wise or is better just to get a dvd player? Thanks for anyone who answers this silly question.

my in laws have a vcr dvd combo and the dvd quality is the same as a regular dvd player...

However vhs production is apparently coming to a hold.
We're saving up for a dvd burner so eventually we can copy our good vhs to dvd... but that will be in a few years. lol

I've heard repeatedly that they're done making VCRs... or at least in the process of stopping. Now I personally have a VCR/DVD player and I think the quality is fabulous.

I think if you're still going to use VCRs to record or whatever, go for the combo. If not, if you have TIVO or other means of digitally recording, the VCR will eventually become extinct, and you should just get the DVD. Right now I still use my VCR on a daily basis but I've been looking into TIVO for my birthday so that's why I'm pleased with my combo player.

My parents have recently bought a new VCR etc and were considering a combo. I personally advised against it due to the fact that if one breaks then you either have to fork out to get it fixed (approximately the same price as a single VCR or DVD) or pay for a totally new one.

I recommend buying a separate VCR and a separate DVD. (plus, as the prices are dropping on the DVD-Rs then you will be able to get one at a decent price) Also, I don't really think that VHS will die out that quickly - Cassette tapes are still available in major music stores and unless you have the money to buy a DVD-R or a Burner, then you would have to buy all your favourite VHS on DVD

I think separate is always better, as you have more freedom for upgrade and for replacement when one breaks.

Hope that helps, it is just my own opinion though!

Shame you aren't near me, I have a VCR that will be looking for a home soon!!

Out VCR was on the decline last spring so we bought a combo -I can't think of brand name off the top of my head. Its great. However if you want to rent/buy DVD's there are two types fullscreen (for the normal tv's most people have) or widescreen. It makes a HUGH difference!!

I used to sell electronic equipment many years ago. Quality is what you pay for it - doesn't matter if you have separate DVD/VCR or combined if you get a good brand. Have you checked out consumer reports on it? What I did notice when I sold equipment was that the more gadgets in a device, the more potential for things to go wrong with it. But again, if you get a reliable brand, it won't be an issue.

I think VCR's will survive until DVD burners come way down in price - people can't afford to throw out their old equipment for a while.

p.s. I still have my 20 year old Beta VCR!

Personally i like having separate devices. If either one in the combo breaks, then you're screwed. Though i hardly ever rent videos now, i still use VCR to record my favorite tv shows. No tivo luxury for me unfortunately. And my dvd-player, well i used it to play almost anything from DVD's to VCD's to CD's and MP3's. It's a daewoo and i've had it for almost 5 years. i paid $70+ back then, and prices nowadays aren't that bad either.

Good luck!

We have both as serperate devices with a little hub that lets us hook them both up to the TV (our TV only has 1 input). I also use my ps2 to play DVDs whenever I have that hooked up. If I were you, Id just get the DVD player and buy some DVDs
VCRs are getting old.

Peace,
Brandon

I can see why you would still want a VCR around for all of those tapes, but honestly, once you experience the DVD, you'll never break out those old tapes again. I am just going to give all of mine away.

My only question is how many VCR tapes have you in your collection....I mean if you have a lot maybe the combo would be better rather thenthose tapes just being useless....but if you only have a few...well then I would say just get the DVD player
