We're leaving for the Philippines in March and won't return till mid May. I don't know what to do with my cat. She's a gorgeous 12 year old white Persian who is very attached to me. I'd hate to board her for that long in her usual cat kennel. If I get a cat sitter, she would get at the most 1 hour of human contact a day, not to mention the fees! I think that finding her a foster home for 2 months would be the best option. None of our relatives wish to take her in for various reasons.
I don't think she'll survive the gruelling 20 hour trip to the Philippines and the required quarantine. Any suggestions? I live 10 minutes away from Cincinnati Ohio.

Yes do everything you can. If you are 20 minutes from a major metro area, hop on Craig's List www.craigslist.org and post for Cincinnati. Sometimes, if people know that there is a set period of time they become more receptive! Contact nursing homes, shopping centers, anyplace that there are kiosks or posting areas. I'd make a flyer and fax it to pet stores and vets offices, just asking if they will post it up. Some will, some won't. Good luck, it sounds as if you're a very caring person!

Hello I wish you can find a temporary home for your cat. I think it's wiser that you don't bring your cat with you on your trip to the Philippines because 2 months is a short time, and quarantine takes a bit of time. Good luck.

Hello! My name is Christine. I live in Bowling Green Ky. I foster for the local humane society. We have a three bedroom home in the city. Is your kitty o.k. with small, cat friendly dogs? Does she have any special needs? I am an at home critter mom. Our cats run the house, we just live here. Your kitty is welcome. Call anytime-270-320-4015.

HI! I reside in Oil CIty, PA. I could also help you. I am involved in fostering for persian rescue and ragdoll rescue, I am currently fostering 2 ragdolls. I am familiar with persians, we have a cream and white van, female. We also have a domestic and 1 lab mix that likes cats. Does your cat like children? I have little ones at home (very nice kids too). Feel free to e-mail me at: [email protected].
Thanks!

Hi Elena and Christine,

Where is Oil City in PA? How far is it from Cincinnati? I think I know where Bowling Green is.

My cat has been an "only child" for the past 11 years. She has not lived with other animals or kids. She sleeps alot.lt's because she's alone at home during the day. Before leaving for work, I leave her food and clean her litter box. She has a water fountain so fresh water is available at all times. When we come back, she expects attention. She is very playful--likes kitty soccer and chasing "Da Bird". She also cuddles up in my lap while I watch TV. I also let her out on our deck. She likes to "patrol" the area for critters. She also expects to be brushed, her eyes cleaned and the usual play during grooming time. I don't groom her everyday though--may 3 x a week. As far as habits, whenever we have visitors, she hides. When everything settles down, she comes out and socializes with the guests. She does not want to be chased. I guess she wants to socialize at her own pace. She prefers people who are quiet and don't make sudden moves.

A bad habit of hers though is that she gets back at me if I come home late by urinating next to the litter box. She is good with poop--no accidents but if she is nervous or afraid or upset, she will pee where she shouldn't just to let you know she's not right. She also cries if she does not get the attention she wants, which is not that often

Her digestive system is also very sensitive. Whenever I take her to the cat kennel when we leave for a few days, she would develop on and off loose stools. This is terrible for a Persian! They don't change her food. I think it is the water. She needs to have running water. When I get her back, loose stools are gone. She's been checked by her vet. No problems. She has all her shots. She's always been healthy. Goes to the vet 1-2 x a year. I believe the sickest she has ever been was last October when she picked up a runny nose (kennel cough?) from a new pet kennel she boarded in for a few days. She was given antibiotics and got better . She never went back to that place.

So I guess this is the scoop. Let me know if you are still interested. Persians are finicky as you probably know. But I love mine to pieces, especially when she sleeps on her back with her paws in the air. Wish I could relax like that.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Maria-
Harley is beautiful!!! Harley is still welcome to visit for a couple of months. My only concern would be we have nine cats of our own ranging in age from 11 weeks to 6 years. ALL of our babies are altered and up to date on their shots. We have a three bedroom home, as I have already mentioned, and it is just the two of us other than our babies and foster babies. Harley could have a room to herself. I am a stay at home mom to CRITTERS, we do not have any children at home. As Harley's mom you know what is best for her. We are here if you need us.
Best of luck,
Christine

I spoke with someone who moved from Singapore and brought with him his 5 cats. No quarantine if papers are okay and animal passes inspection. However, if cats leave back to return to Singapore, they will be subject to quarantine regulations of Singapore and treated like imported from here.

I checked with the Philippines' Bureau of Animal Industry. Looks like Yayi is right. There is no quarantine as long as the papers are in order. We've thus decided to take Harley with us. I'm currently working on her permits. I'm dreading the long trip with an unhappy cat. She'll be in the cabin of course under the seat in front of me. Any advice on how to care for a cat in the plane? Thanks anyway, Christine and Elena for your kind offer to take Harley in.
