I've had my cat for a few months now. I found him outside with an injured leg. He has been to the vet and they said he was negative on Felv, and Feline Aids. We didn't get his shots because we didn't plan on keeping him this long. He is inside only now. I have 3 other cats who all do have their vaccinations. He is a very shy cat and hides under the bed. He doesn't like people at all except when I bring him food he will rub up against me. The problem is for the past week or so he has had diarrhea. I can't tell if its bloody or not. It's kindof like pancake batter I guess. I with held food from him for 24 hrs, and tried to feed him rice after the 24 hrs.. he didn't like the rice and I didn't want to make him go hungry so I went back to the food. He has had diarrhea all throughout this time. It's all over his rear end. We are taking him to the vet Friday to get him checked out.. I was just hoping that someone could provide me with information.. or possible causes?

Since you found him oustide he could have worms/parasites. Other possible causes are that he might be allergic to something in his food, sensitive stomach or an irritable bowl. Make sure to take a stool sample when you go to the vet so he/she can do a fecal test. In the meantime, try feeding him just dry food with a little bit of baby food (squash) or canned pumpkin (100%). A few people recommended the pumpkin/squash remedy to make their stool firmer. It's worked for Kionu so I'm hoping it will for you too.

P.S. Too much canned food can cause soft stools (it's happened with my boys).

My cat care book advises that you mix something bland, such as cooked chicken or fish with the rice to encourage them to eat it and mine have always eaten it like this when they've had a bout of diarrhea. You could try that to keep him going on until he sees the vet on Friday.

I have never heard of too much canned food causing loose stools, but I agree it is possible that if he's allergic to an *ingredient* in the food he's eating now that could be the culprit.

Like Jan, I find that plain, skinless roasted chicken is helpful. Baby food, turkey or chicken flavor (make sure there are no onions in it) can help bind the stools. You might also try a different brand of cat food (high quality) to see if that makes a difference. Sometimes beef flavors can be difficult for cats to digest and some do develop allergies to it.

You're doing the best thing by taking him to the vet, and as Shanna suggested, bring a stool sample. It's important to find the cause of the diarrhea, not just try to stop it.

That is odd. Miko had loose stools when he was younger. We were feeding him strictly canned food. Our vet said that some cats get loose stools if they eat too much canned because of the water content (or something like that, I don't remember it was a long time ago). Anyway, he recommended we swtich Miko over to dry food for a few weeks to see what happens. When we switched him over, he never had loose stools. It's been the same with all of our cats. If they eat too much canned food, they get the runs. Maybe it's just me?

He's been dewormed. We've had him for about 4 months.. maybe longer. And hes been on the same hard food since then, he just now got the diarrhea last week. I never feed them canned food either cause I heard that it could cause loose stools also.

Kionu was wormed when we first got him. Just recently he had the same problems as your cat. Sometimes the first de-worming treatment leave some critters left behind, which was the case with Kionu. Maybe you can ask your vet if he recommends another de-worming treatment (Kionu is on the treatment that requires 2 doses, 2 weeks apart). I hope everything works out!

Well we took our other cats to the vet about 2 months ago.. and our vet gave us a bottle of dewormer.. so I made my husband deworm all of them again tomorrow.. hopefully that is all that is wrong with him.

My little Cissa has vomitted the last 2 days and has gotten some loose stools again. If I'm reading things right, just have her eat dry food and see if her tummy settles.

Poor little guy - my kitten got that a month or so after I got her. Glad the problem was solved and he's on his way to feeling better!
