I saw that story on the national news on NBC.... Me and my Housemate thought that was very very sad because we both love the library. But, they do have a point.... They dont want to take away money from the police and fire departments the news report said... but all in all. The news is sad all around.

I can see shutting one down and maybe redistributing the books, but shutting all three down makes no sense!

Consolidation would seem to be the sensible thing to do.

The Tucson-Pima Public Library is having budget problems and has responded by cutting hours and staff. I can't imagine not having a library nearby, as I cannot afford to BUY the 5-7 books that I read, every WEEK.

Might as well close the world for reading children in that area.

oh no no no!

Books are important in everyones lives, our county libraries have had to cut their budgets as well.

Bad move, especially since Salinas is described as "blue collar" - I guess anybody who can't afford to buy books will just have to stop reading. Couldn't they just keep one of the three open? And perhaps run a bookmobile in the areas affected by the closure of the other two branches? And ask people to donate books they no longer want or need? Our town (population 9,600+) was thinking about closing the library for financial reasons, too, but decided to just open it two afternoons & evenings a week. Closing all three branches seems rather drastic.

I think one of the reasons they close down is because there arent many young people interested in books. also because there isnt as many young people as there was 20, 30 , 40 years ago
I only jknow of one library here in frankfurt

I'll be lighting a candle tonight.

As a child I read for enjoyment. It's something I want to pass on to my future children. As others have stated, I cannot see why they can't consolidate three libraries into one.
