I finally went to the pet store in my area that sells premium cat food, and got some cans of each food that I thought my cat would try(he was the picky eater who does not like wet foood), He seemed only to like Innova canned food, if I hand feed it to him( the things we do for our cats); as I said I bought home different cans one of Solid gold tuna and and 4 of Evolve turkey and chicken. The Tuna was a big hit with my tortie, and when she was done with this, she wanted to eat the evolve that I tried to give my cat. Are solid gold and Evolve good foods? Anyone familiar with their dry foods? are the kibble small? thanks all.

Hi,

The solid gold tuna looks great re the ingredients, unfortunately, all the Evolve products I looked at, the ingredients include garlic on both the dry and canned foods, and I do not advise feeding garlic to cats.

Here are some links to articles so you can see why I came to this conclusion:
Dr. Fosters and Smith article
and Feline Future section on garlic

I picked up a can of Innova and that has garlic as an ingredient, and If I remember right( I may be wrong) so does wellness. If it is so bad why do these premium companies use it then?

I think it's because there is some debate over whether or not garlic is really harmful or not? Personally I'm erring on the side of caution and not feeding garlic. Two great canned foods that I know that do not have garlic are California Natural (I feed this, it's been a great food for my cats) and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. I'm sure others can recommend more that do not have garlic.

Because for some reason, there are those in the cat food industry that like to think it only takes an excessive amount (which since there is no way to predict how much it will take for any particular cat to have a reaction to and get into the problem of Heinz Body Anemia, is nonsense...imo), or they think that because it's so good for humans, and is used with dogs, they insist it has health benefits and is great for cats...ignoring what is to me the central fact..this is basic chemistry....both onions and garlic contain an "alkaloid disulfide compound that irrefutably causes Heinz Body Anemia" from a respected pet nutritionist, and that's enough reason for me. It does not matter if it's cooked, or a "special variety" of garlic, the compound is part of the very nature of garlic.

Innova fwiw, has stopped using garlic in its foods, and one can tell if you have the newer food by the use by date on the can. If you write to the company they will confirm that, and give you the date to check for.

Premium foods that do not use garlic include Felidae and PetGuard, Natural Balance, to name a few.

This is the same info I have - apparently, the company is "using up" the old labels/bags.

If it were me...
I would make my decision by ingredients.

Things to look for:
- Low ash content
- Low starches content
- Stay away from ANY meat with the descriptors "parts" or "meal" If it doen't say it straight,ie turkey, chicken, tuna, salmon (not even "seafood") then you don't know what is in it.

Innovia is the ONLY food I have found that is that quality. On the garlic note, watch the kitties with sensitive stomachs, otherwise I have not heard anything bad about it until now...

I have only ever fed my boys the dry food. I make my own "wet" food. The kibble is not as small as the Wellness, but close. The premium pet food store should have samples or be willing to get you some...That is how I found Innovia. It never hurts to ask!

Good Luck!
