Hello, everyone!

I am new here, and newly owned by Hunter and Cougar.

I took the kittens to a local vet, but, after having a conversation with her about health and nutrition, I'm sure I would like to find a different doctor. As a long-time human lowcarber, I find it hard to believe that a cat can reach and maintain optimal health by eating grain-based kibble, which is what this doctor said. She has a prejudice against fat and calories, too, and called canned food "about as good as a bag of doritos." She is WRONG, IMO.

Does anyone know of a vet in the DC metro area who is BARF/Catkins friendly?

Thanks!

Do Beralyn, SharonKay, and Lexilou live in the DC area? I'm not sure. I hope you can find a good recommendation. I think many people on this site would agree with you on your thoughts nutritionwise. I give my cats premium wet food twice a day and let them free-feed on SolidGold kibble during the day (which has no corn) mostly to help them keep their teeth clean. I haven't been able to get them on a good toothbrushing routine.

LOL...this is the kind of person/doctor who would also shriek if they saw my diet and proclaim that my cholesterol must be through the roof. Oddly enough it drops nicely while I eat my butter, eggs and bacon every day

Have to say, who in the world would worry about fat and calories for kittens..that's just what they need, along with higher protein until they are out of kittenhood.

Yup, you have a good memory Colleen!!

Welcome portdevoix!

I am about 40 minutes outside of DC in Northern, VA. We go to a vet in Sterling Virginia: Countryside animal clinic. So far we haven't had too many concerns with our baby but we've been very pleased with them them. My boyfriend Brendan has grown up with cats and they've all gone to that same vet. As for them being BARF/Catkins friendly, I am not sure what that is, so I couldn't tell you. But good luck finding a vet that you can get a long with!

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm actually hoing for something inside the Beltway, as I live in Georgetown.

BARF = Bones And Raw Food. Basically, getting the cats away from processed foods and onto natural nutrition.

Catkins = Atkins for cats. Makes sense that carnivores should eat mostly protein and less carbs than they normally get.

Yeah I am pretty far outside the beltway. I figured with your DC location you were somewhere inside. I hope you are able to find someone helpful. Did you look here at all?

I find the Washingtonian to be very helpful.

Also thanks for the explanation of BARF/Catkins. I learned something new today.

Thank you, Katie. I will stay with the current vet until they are fixed, and I have some time before their next scheduled visit. This will give me ample opportunity to find a suitable doctor for my kidz.

Well..just let me know. BTW..if you happen to be "free" the weekend of Feb. 19th and 20th, Alley Cat Allies is holding a 2 day feral fix. The more volunteers the better and it's a great way to learn about the TNR movement.

We hope to have 480 cats at the clinic.
