Snowball has been constipated for the past few days, and since he's gotten older this has been a problem for him off and on. Usually we get good results by using hairball ointment as a laxative, and this is what our vet recommends. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped at all this time, and poor Snowball seems quite uncomfortable. I called the veterinary clinic and they can't see him until tomorrow afternoon. When I asked if there was anything else we could do to make poor Snowball more comfortable, they said they needed to do x-rays and etc. first to find out what is going on, but that we could keep trying the hairball ointment if we wanted to.

I really hope he doesn't have anything seriously wrong.

Thanks for all your suggestions and good thoughts. I don't think it's anything he ate, since our home is cat-proofed, and he doesn't eat any unusual things that he might find on the floor. Don't older cats have more of a tendency to become constipated because they're less active?

I'll let you know what the vet says tomorrow.

Yes, Lorie, they do, Sasha is 12 -1/2 now. He does from time to time, maybe a 1-2 days and then shazam! (well, you didn't need the details, did you.) But it's not so much the constipation sometimes, as just when he ages the way his digestive system is working and/or some other little glitches that can crop up. I do hope it's nothing serious. And I know with your huge love he will be back to normal in no time! We are sending healing and promising vibes to Snowball!!

Being dehydrated lends to constipation issues, and I believe older cats always need to be encouraged to get in as much liquid as possible.

For Patrick's crf related constipation issues, we've used Lactulose (prescription) but he reacts so strongly to it, that I've switched to using slippery elm bark syrup which I make up myself using plain slippery elm bark powder and water as per the recipe on the felinecrf.org site, under constipation tx's.

Hope Snowball feels better soon,
