Susie, I'm sorry I haven't seen this thread until now--of course I am sending you mega-vibes to stay calm and have a relatively stress-free procedure. I do hope they can find and treat the source of your pain. I'll be thinking of you on Thursday. Big squishy hug to you!

I am just seeing this now - I am sorry Susie!

You are in my thoughts as you go through this procedure - and think of a big pseudo hug as you are in the room - from all of us, just pretend that all of our arms are around you!

I have had laparoscopy twice - once to have a tubal ligation and the second last year to investigate abdominal pain. I had a general anaesthetic and in each case I was advised to start 'counting' and the next thing I remember is waking up in recovery:-). The surgery is easy, and for me the biggest challenge was recovering from the anaesthetic (I have reactions to it so that my blood pressure goes very low and takes a LONG time to return to normal). I am also a high risk candidate since I am diabetic and on insulin so the anaesthesist was even more actively involved.

You should be released later the same day after a few hours in recovery where they make sure you have no problems before they release you. Pain should be minimal and easily handled by over the counter pain medication. Make sure you have someone to drive you home and be prepared to sleep when you get home and into the next day. You will probably feel some what 'slow' the day after and you may feel some achiness in your shoulders and chest all of which is absolutely and perfectly normal. You will be given all sorts of written down information about what to expect before, during and after the surgery and don't hesitate to ask questions of the nurse while they are prepping you for surgery.

Your surgeon or nurse may even be able to give you a quick summary of the results of the procedure while you are in recovery afterwards , even if it is only to say "Everything went fine" so you won't have to wait on pins and needles for the full report that will follow later.

You will have small incisions in the abdomen and another down above the pubis which will have small self-dissolving stitches holding them closed. If for some reason the edges of the incision pull apart after the stitches dissolve (mine did) you can buy small self-adhesive plastic strips that pull together the edges and secure them in place while they heal. They are commercially available at any pharmacy and not expensive - I am sorry, I don't recall their proper name, but they were great! (A nurse recommended them to me).

Good luck with the procedure. I know that everything will go smoothly and without complications for you, too.

Kathryn

Susie, I had a laparoscopy two years ago. The procedure itself is nothing - I had a little bit of a sore abdomen, but that was it, and the scars faded very quickly. I think the worst part is wondering what they'll find, so it's best to get it over with as soon as possible. You'll definitely be in my thoughts on Thursday.
