We've got a winter storm heading our way tonight and I'm just not ready for it! I've got plenty of groceries and stuff.....but I still needed to get a few things for my girl's Christmas stockings and for Christmas dinner. Plus, I'm supposed to be off work tomorrow......but since I'm a nurse.....I know I'll get called in because there will be some people who can't get in to work. It always happens. So, I guess I better get in bed early.

I don't like winter time! It's too darn cold!

It looks like it's going to be a big one!

Youch - stay all bundled up and warm! I've never been in a snow storm so I have no idea what they're like - we might get snow showers and by that they mean cold rain, lol! But be safe!

Cold rain.....lol!! We've been having that all day...but it's now changing over to snow and ice as the temperature drops down to a low of 28 tonight. It makes me shiver just thinking about it.

I just really needed to be off work tomorrow.....I'll still got things to do to get ready for Christmas! And driving on snow is not a problem for me......but when it's solid ice (which is what we often get here in Nashville)....driving is very tricky. We don't get nice fluffy snow here......we get the wet, slushy, icy junk that freezes into an ice skating rink overnight. It's terrible!

Back several years ago......(some of you may remember) we had a terrible ice storm that basically shut down the city for almost a week! Thousands of people lost power and the electric company couldn't get everyone turned back on for about two weeks. I didn't lose power that time because I lived in a condo that had underground utilities. But now I live in a house that loses power every time the wind blows. So, I'm a little worried about that also. It's going to be rough for me and my girls and all my kitties if we lose power. I really hope this thing weakens some before it hits us.

Oh wow Lacey! He needs to stay put for tonight! It is too dangerous to be driving through this storm in the dark!! I heard you guys got hit pretty hard.....now we're gonna get it too!

If I could figure out a way to give it to you.......I'd send all this crud to you! I'm from Florida originally.....I'm perfectly fine with a sunny and 75 degree day on Christmas!

I am a nurse, too, but I have never had to stay over or come in due to weather. Now I am in case management so I won't have to anyway. My last day of med/surg is Christmas day since when I told my old boss that I was going to go to CM, two months ago, she turned kind of pale and said "but how am I going to cover Christmas?" So I volunteered to work Christmas day. It will be an extra day for me, but eight hours of time and a half, followed by four of double time won't hurt on payday. Then it is back to five eights a week of no more lifting, bed pans, IVs infiltrating, confused patients, charting, etc. Can you tell I was burning out? Becky

Loving my beautiful baby girl
I'm with you, Robin, winter's just way too cold for me!
Another RN here!
Why on earth do these people have to keep being sick on Holidays?
I'm doing private duty pediatric now and really enjoy it, beats the hospital any day!

I have never felt so secure - we have so many nurses on TCS, many of you do not know each other I don't think!

Robin - we're expecting a white christmas up here and send us some fast- skiing is VERY late this year. But take care when you venture out tomorrow morning. I was thinking that Nashville is very festive right now? I heard it's a very pretty place, actually. I hope your power stays on <UGH!> and you're safe and warm.

My kitties are having a fit not being able to go outside.
BB has tried it but gets out on the porch and decides it ain't worth it.
We got over 12 inches of snow in the last 24 hours!
Plus it is still coming down pretty good and strong wind blowing!
It actually lightninged outside. Jeff saw it, I didn't but it's crazy.
They just said on the local weather that we had some thunder too.
I have never heard of a thunder snowstorm but we are having one!
I've got pictures from last night when it first started and then just a
little while ago. I will post them when I get a chance.

Yes, looks like this weather event may be a record breaker. Most I seen in a while and I remember the blizzards of the late 1970s. That's the bad news. Oh, the other bad news is that it may take a while for me to dig out. The good news is that our family had planned to have Christmas at my niece's over New Year's. She is NW of Indianapolis and begging for snow!

Forgot to mention a state of emergency has been declared here.

Robin, I remember how hospitals were begging for volunteers with 4-wheel drive vehicles to bring in staff during those blizzards in the 1970s.

Last year when we had a bad snow storm....I was working nights then. I had just finished a four day stent and came home and went to bed.....just missing the storm. I had trained my daughter that when I was asleep during the day....she was NOT to wake me up unless the house was on fire or somebody was bleeding uncontrollably. As it turned out....my manager called about 3:00pm and was going to beg me to come in. My daughter answered the phone and said, "I'm sorry....but I'm not allowed to wake my mom up." (and she refused to do so!)
So I didn't go in because I never talked to my manager.

I found out later that all the employees who were at the hospital when the storm hit....had to STAY there overnight so there would be enough staff the next day. Everyone who had to spend the night there said it was just awful! Some people had to sleep on gurneys, some on exam tables, some on the floor......just wherever they could find a place. And of course....they couldn't take showers the next day.....just had to clean up the best they could with what was available.

Thank God my daughter actually minded me that day!

Ah, a well trained daughter. I have heard of situations like that, not being able to go home. Not being able to discharge any patients, either. They can get cranky when they can't go home. But here in sunny Southern Cal I haven't had that kind of experience. And so far, no earthquakes either, though we practice for them. No, my worst work fear is that the union will call a strike. OMG!! We already have 13 inches(Ohio) and it is STILL coming down...and NOW ice is coming down with it!!!
It is just horrendous out there!!! I shovelled and looked out and the snow was already another 5 inches deep!! I was going to use the snowblower tomorrow, but there is NO way it would get through that HEAVY icy snow mixture and at about 12 inches deep, the snowblower would just plain quit on me!
I feel SO sorry for the kitties and dogs and other animals outside who cannot get in from all that awful weather!

Oh--I'm a nurse too, but not working outside the home right now, as DH is VERY ill. He's been in the hospitals over the past year and I felt SO badly for the nurses as they were ALL over-worked, and over-stressed! At one hospital, they have most of them working 12 hr. shifts. THEN, if they can't find enough nurses for the next shift, they can "Mandate" them to work 4 extra hours. You can only refuse 4 times--then they let you go ( --HEY!! Now THAT should help with the shortage of nurses!!!
)
For all those who are affected by this awful storm, be safe and drive MORE than carefully!!!!!!!!!!!
