Dead Marine's Kin plead for e-mail

The family of a Marine killed in Iraq is pleading with Internet giant Yahoo! for access to his e-mail account, which the company says is off-limits under its privacy policy.

So what do you think? This seems extremely conflicting to me. On one hand you can sympathise with the family yet on the other hand one would not know what are the intentions of the marine who died and perhaps he may have wanted his privacy.

There might be many things the soldier did not want his family to know...you have to respect one's right to privacy even in death. Now if Yahoo has copies of the emails that he sent family members (and they did not save, those can be released IMO.

That is a very good point, I voted to release, but you are correct.

Yeah, good call Barb. In addition to this, when you join any internet email, there are TOS that you agree too, and one is the privacy policy. I suppose if you wanted this overridden in death, you could add it to a will or something. I can empathize with the family's frustration, though.

I think it's sad that this young man had to die for his country, and I feel sorry for his family. But why do they think they need access to his email account???? There should be other ways the family can remember him, and there should be physical reminders of him around the house, for example, baby and childhood pictures, and maybe there's a written record of the special events in his life.

EDIT: I forgot to say I voted that Yahoo should NOT release the email account to the family.

If he wanted them to know his life story in death, via What email he recieved, he would have told someone his email password. he didn't, sooo.. They don't need to know.

If he wasn't entitled to privacy, there wouldn't be passwords on accounts. I am sure his family is grief stricken, but they may be surprised by what they find in their son's email account. I think he is due the respect of privacy, even in death.

Plus they might find things they would be better off not knowing.

Until I read the posts, I thought it should be released, but you have made very good points.
