I notice that everyone recommends doing that for their pets. I am just wondering if the information in the chip is permanent. Say you move, can you change the address on the chip without having to take it out and insert a new one? Does it hurt them to be chipped? We move alot due to military reasons and I want to cause him the least amount of pain possible.

If I understand them correctly...the chips contain an ID #.

So whereever you had the chip inserted, should have that number. And there should be a registry. So long as you keep your information current with the registry, then you should be fine.

yep, when we got sara chipped, it did not hurt her at all, i dont even think she noticed, it was right between the shoulder blades... yes, the chip contains as far as i know, just the id #, then if someone finds the kitty, they can pull up the id# and find out owner information... when i had sara chipped i had to send it registration papers and it costs 12.50$, just like spotz said, when you move, make sure to change your address with the place you registered... we are military as well, and you shouldnt have any problems!!!

Hi Charcol. Just to add to what other have said. Basically its no different than your cat getting a vaccine or shot. We have all of the cats that go through our rescue microchipped. Its really a great thing. We havent had any reaction from any of them but my kitten who is a terror at the vet so she really doesnt count.

the chip itself is about the length of a long grain of rice. whats on that is a microchip number so when they scan it thats what comes up. example - 0A10026436. there are different companies that do the microchips. when a chip is scanned the number indicates which company made the chip and then whoever finds the kitty calls in with the chip number. the registery contains all of your information, where the chip was from, who implanted it, all the info about your kitty (neutered, breed, special markings, etc) but you do have to update that.

i suggest which ever company you use you also register at 24petwatch. that is where our rescue gets our chips from. they will let you register chips with them for free no matter what company made them. just an added security.

since you are involved with the military and move often it is SO important to keep updated. we have a cat here now that got out somehow when his family moved from KY to NC, from one base to another, but didnt update and we cant find them now.

i agree, maverick didnt even flinch when she had hers. our vet just asked us to keep the up to date with our address and phone numbers.

i gave her my two house numbers, my mobile, my boyfriends mobile, his house number and our fax. was about to give them my parents mobile numbers just in case when the vet informed me they had quite enough information to trace us! lol
