I agree:-). He is trying to let you know - albeit rather clumsily - that he knows you have had a rough time, and that even though it didn't seem very supportive, he was treating you with the male version of sympathy. Its hard not to take it personal. Just remember he is trying to let you know he knows your not feeling well. He is trying to sympathize. He is trying to show compassion. They just can never get the words right.
Its like when we ask them, " Is my butt to big in these pants?" Most times either way they answer they're going to be in trouble!
