Thank you all so much for the advice and help you gave me for my cat Elvis.

Yesterday I called the vet and he was gone for the day. I left a message for him to call me first thing this morning. But then last night I saw Elvis trying to urinate and he couldn't at all. Then when my boyfriend and I approached him he hissed at us. I knew immediately something was wrong because I have only seen the cat hiss one other time in his life and it was at a dog! There is a 24 hour animal ER here in Philly (but it is notoriously expensive!). But having no choice I took him in right away and the vet there said he was completely blocked. Luckily, from me monitoring him neurotically
it was very early and there was not any real damage done. They unblocked him and kept him for the night. This morning I transferred him from that hospital to our vet, which is also an animal hospital. Poor Elvis was very upset and a little groggy, but I know it was the only choice. Our vet is going to keep Elvis for the next couple of days and do xrays, blood work, monitor him, etc. Luckily they are charging me a flat rate that covers everything and the rate stays whether its 4 days or 10 days. Hopefully my poor kitty won't block again and I can go visit him whenever. The only thing that makes me mad is that the rate for indefinitely is LESS than what I paid for 12 hours in the other hospital
But, I know that even though he could have been able to make it to the morning to go to my regular vet, I would never have forgiven myself if something would have happened to him last night. Thank God for credit cards!

But thank you all for your support, I will keep you posted on how things go!

I am so glad you realized it was that serious, and glad he is going to be okay. Tyler was hospitlalized for 4 days as I recall before he could come home when he blocked.

Wishing Elvis a quick recovery so he can be home again soon

I rate PEACE OF MIND as being "priceless". Sometimes we just gotta do what we gotta do.

Please keep us up to date!

Grab an old tee shirt and do a vigorous exercise program in it- then stuff it in a plastic bag and take it to the vets and leave it in dear Elvis (the cat is in the building) cage to soothe him down-

Hello All,

My cat Elvis was released from the vet today
. As most of you know, he had a blockage and he was in the vet from last Wednesday. Well he had been urinating on his own for about 36 hours so I was able to take him home. He is doing okay, just sleeping a lot and catching up on some rest. I was wondering how likely it is that he will block again? Has anyone had this happen and their cat did or did not block again? I am keeping him on the special food (S/D) for 6 months and then switching him to another special food (C/D) which he will be on for the rest of his life. The vet said that if I stick with the diet, he should be fine, but I have heard that males can keep getting blocked. And the vet told me to keep an eye on him and make sure he is urinating...hes only been home for a few hours so he hasn't gone to the bathroom at all yet.
I guess I'm just interested in hearing others' experiences and wondering if there is a chance this will clear up without the surgery.

Thanks!

I merged your posts- and also toss out the old litter pan and give him a new one. Often they avoid using the litter pan that "hurt" them in the first place-

Unfortunately once cats have this problem, they will always be prone to blocking. There are a few things you can do to minimize the chance however:

1. Keep him on his perscription diet at all costs.
2. Feed only wet food if you can.
3. Get him drinking as much water as possible.
a) use only stainless steel or ceramic bowls
b) use a dog sized water bowl filled to the brim
c) get a kitty fountain
d) serve chilled refrigerated water (if thats what your cat likes)
e) let him drink from toilets, showers, sinks etc... (unless he could injest a cleaner)
