Hi, I sure hope someone can help. I have 2 kitties, both female. One is 14yrs old (Sadie) & the other is 13yrs old (Taz). Taz has been to the vet & we found that her kidneys are showing signs of old age. Im trying to come to terms that my baby girls are getting old. Anyway, my problem is the medicine she has to take. I have never had to give them pills before. I bought some canned food & tried to sneak the pill in but she ate all but the pill. I tried cheese & that was a no go. I tried a bear hug to get the pill in her mouth & needless to say she won that battle. I dont know if ya'll have any tricks of the trade to help get these pills down her. If anyone has any idea, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Em

WELCOME TO TCS

yes it is hard to watch our babies grow older

My Tipsy is a total nightmare to give pills too so I discussed this with my vet and he showed me the technique that they use - I find it easier to do with 2 people (however I can do my other cat by myself)

Its kinda hard to explain so I will do my best. You put your hand over their head as if going in from behind - you place your thumb and forefingers on their cheekbones and gentle tilt their head back. Tilt their head quite far back (I have been promised this does not hurt them) and once its far back with your other hand open their mouth.
Then get someone else to but the tablet in their mouth and try and get it to drop towards the back of their mouth, then just close their mouth and ensure it stays shut - they may struggle a bit but keep their head tilted back and their mouth shut.
when they 'lick their lips' it means the tablet has gone down.

It might be a good idea to discuss giving tablets with your vet - or even the vet nurse and get them to show you exactly how they do it...

well I hope it kinda explains what I was shown to do - its so hard to explain.

welcome again and I look forward to getting to know you

Thank you for the warm welcome. I was finally successful last night with one of her pills, woo hoo, of course she hid from me the rest of the night. Again thank you for taking the time to respond.

I'm glad you finally managed to give her a pill, though I'm sorry she hid from you... maybe luring her out with treats next time might help her forgive you easier?
