I would rather listen to cats fighting in a metal barrel that hear one note uttered by Mariah Carey! Talk about caterwauling! YUCK!!!!!
I love traditional Christmas carols sung by people like Harry Connick Jr., you know, people that can actually sing. I would have loved to hear Brian Setzer sing "O, Holy Night " on the White House Christmas special last year, but I missed it.
I think the music is the best part of Christmas celebrations.

If you guys haven't heard Trans-Siberian Orchestra you NEED to! It's like Mannheim Steamroller kicked up a few notches.
One of the composers is Jon Oliva, of the hard rock group Savatage. (If you know who he is, you can definitely see it in TSO.) They have some downloads and samples on their website: http://www.trans-siberian.com/

AMEN, SISTER! I have wanted to slap some "singers" who decided a classic needed more notes or changed it in other ways.

I've had voice training and sang in school choirs myself. (Until I had pneumonia I had a 4 octave range).

Uh oh

I have a CD of "Reggae Christmas Carols" - no caterwauling going on there. But the arrangement of the songs is so fun ! Everyone who listens to it ends up smiling !

Whitney Houston is guilty of this too. Alot of music afficionados hate it. It's in a lot of jazz and R&B music.

Wow, do I agree, and it's so great to hear others who share my views! Why do these people keep thinking they need to come along and rerecord these beautiful songs, destroying the entire work in the process! I definately enjoy listening to the traditional Christmas albums!

OK, that's all. Thanks for listening to my rant.
THEY CANNOT SING!!!!!! THAT is WHY! Same reason so many of the new singers - especially the younger ones, sing like Pee Wee Herman talks - like they are tongue tied. They open their mouth and their tongue is stuck to their botton teeth! AND YET think of how much money they make!

I've downloaded some new stuff, but don't particularly like it.
Well if you don't mind Christmas with a "country twang (not much though)" listen to Reba Mcintire, George Strait and Garth Brooks. THEY sing the songs as they should be!

I hate the way Mariah Carey sings too!!! She sounds really whiny! I have 'the best christmas album in the world ever' in my cd player at the moment, I don't like a lot of the songs on it but it was worth paying for it for the couple of songs I love. I also have a cd I got free in a newspaper last year, it's frank sinatra, Bing crosby etc. singing carols. I will admit to having paid to download a few tracks from 'Jingle Cats' too
Cat's meowing white christmas is an experience indeed!!!

Under the cats, mostly.
Heya Heidi - yep I agree - she has to be the single most irritating singer on the planet! Not only that, but I hate singers who think they can... but in all reality, simply can't. Good example? Jamelia. Oh she sounds fab once all the editing has been done - but my god, when I heard her live last night she was utterly dreadful! I've never heard anything so horrible in my whole life!! I sat there thinking that I could be making money out of ventures like this - why do they insist on choosing singers for the way they look and not for their voice? I sing, and I'm not ashamed to say that I sing well, I love what I do... I'm not the best in the world, but I'm better than some of these "big stars". U reckon they need to start looking for singers with talent... not the biggest breasts or the prettiest smile.

Yeah -- doesn't make the caterwauling any more enjoyable, but at least we're not alone!

Lillekat, you are so right on editing doing most of the work. I can't stand listening to a lot of modern live singers anymore.

And country singers do do the old classics correctly.
