I trim Tibby's and Molly's claws on a regular basis and have been shown how to do it correctly. The thing is, Tibby has a couple of black claws that I am a bit intimidated by when it comes to trimming!

I know that I am only cutting the tip, but as I can't see the blood vessel, I am terrified of making him bleed!

Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated!

I can't say that I've ever encountered totally black claws on a cat before.

I would say use the white claws on the same foot as a reference to how much you can trim.

Thank you for your advice, I have heard of a powder (the name escapes me) but apparently it is excellent to keep handy when trimming claws - on the off chance that it bleeds?

Does anyone know about this and if it is good?

I think it's called styptic powder - it's available at most pet stores. I don't know if it's safe to use on cats, though...you might want to ask a vet about it.

An ice cube held against the tip of the nail works pretty well, too, and is 100% nontoxic. That's what I use if I accidentally clip my black dog's nails too short.

*edit
Found some on the 'net to show for example, and it says it can be used on cats:
kwik stop
styptic pads

Buffy used to be so good about getting her nails clipped, but then I accidently cut the quick on one of her back feet, and now she spazzes when I try to clip her nails. Especially when I try to clip one of the back feet. Tsk... It's a cryin' shame... lol
