I didnt know if this should be in behavior or health, but Tousse loves sweets! Okay in my limited knowlegde of felines I could have sworn sweets wasn't one of thier favs. Fish maybe, candy...uh no. So this morning I am making hot chocolate and was talking to my cousin at the same time, when she looks up and asked me what was in the bowl on the counter. I turn around and see Tousse going to town on the whip cream. So I take it away and dump it in the trash. And so we continue our conversation over hot chocolate and pie and all of a sudden this black paw comes out of no where and swipes a piece of my pie. Uh, bad kitty? So I attempt to wrestle the pie from him but Tousse has learned the valuble art of swallowing with out chewing. I've been noticing more and more lately that Tousse really loves sweet things. Cookies, cake, muffins, not that I give him these things. He just goes nuts when I have them. I try to keep him on his diet of cat food and cat treats but....I even bought him Kitty Candy because its supposed to be sweet. And of course he loves it. So is it okay to give him sweets that dont have chocolate or other harmful things in them?

lol...Ebony takes an interest in any people food. She whines and begs whenever we are eating anything, including sweets! I can't really help out, as I have no idea if 'sweets' (other than chocolate of course) are ok for the kitties. I usually try to avoid giving Eb sweet foods, but sometimes she is too quick for me.

Where did you find Kitty Candy? I can't say I've ever seen that before...

I am pretty sure chocolate is a no-no for cats and can kill them. It's dangerous to their health. So, be careful.

Thanks Alissa for the link. But chocolate and onions are two definite NO's in our house. Like Ebony, Toussaint is some times just too fast. Please see whip cream incident. I checked the label and there are no NO ingredients in whip cream.

Berylayn, Kitty Candy is a product I found in a local pet store called, Doggie in the Window and Toussaint goes nuts
for it! It is made and sold only for the store. I tried to see if you can order it online but it didnt look like it. Beasley like it too but just not as intensely as Toussaint. Sighs. My boy, I tell you.

It's just not a good idea. One reason is simply if he's eating sweet stuff, he's not eating a balanced diet, what he needs...which is a meat-based diet, as cats are obligate carnivores. If it were me, I'd not buy him kitty candy treats, there are other excellent treats on the market that are better for him, instead of letting him get to the whipped cream (well, you didn't let him, but now that you know your little thief will be going for it, cap it with a lid asap!), try giving him some plain yoghurt, or catsip/other cat milk.

As to why he's doing this, I don't have that answer...maybe one of the vet techs here will, or your vet could advise you.

A very small amount of sweet fruit is ok from time to time, my girl with a sweet tooth gets mango, peach and banana sometimes; she also loves snow peas, cooked baby carrots and sweet potato! (these foods have been vet-approved for Lexxus) Give your vet a call and ask her to list a few fruits/veggies that are not harmful to your baby.

All of mine have exhibited occasional sweet teeth as well. One loves to lick jam - not butter, but jam - off of my toast if I put it down. Two of them like fruitcake. Another like oatmeal cookies or bread- not a lot, but small bits. Bear is my veggie freak - he steals lettuce out of the salad so I always have to set some aside for him to munch and enjoys green vegetables at any time he can steal them. He and Lion also love the little baby carrots - not to eat, but to play with. They are a convenient size (they don't get the really tiny ones, just the larger tiny ones) to carry in their mouth and bat around, and they can really sink your teeth into them. They make their "I've got prey" meow for carrots and it is hilarious to watch them play with them. They do the same with grapes, playing with them until eventually they get too punctured by teeth marks, and then eat them.

When I was growing up, we had a bicolour orange and white longhaired cat named Missy. For dessert Mom would often just have cookies. Do you know those rounded marshmallow cookies covered with chocolate on a cookie base with a little bit of jam? Well, those were Missy's absolute favourites. We never gave them to her but never-the-less she managed to keep herself well supplied. We were never fast enough to stop her. She knew the sound of the package opening and would come running. She would wait until our backs were turned then jump in, steal one of them and race off with it. We would find the cookie base llater, licked clean and all of the marshmallow gone. One night, she ate 5 of them before we remembered that the cookies were on the counter and accessible. We came in and found empty cookie bases licked clean of their marshmallow and jam.

Merlin won't touch any flavour of cat treat, tuna, turkey, or any other kind of human food. (I can make tuna casserole with him sitting on the counters watching, and he never makes a move for it.)

However, break out the sweets, and he goes bonkers. He tries to stick his head in my mouth whenever I'm eating a freezer pop. (He likes the green ones best.) Pies, he loves. Whipped Cream, well, all three of my boys know the sound of a shaken can, and come running for a taste. (They eat it like I do - a little bit straight from the can. Mind you, I'm not the one giving them human food - no matter what I say to my mom, she won't stop.) Oranges, apples, pastries, cakes, paska (a kind of Slovak bread), hutka (another Slovak dish made with eggs and sugar for Easter), jello, pudding (especially tapioca), yogurt, ice cream, sweetned dry cereal....

It's a bit of a battle in my house to enjoy desert in peace.

Sash loves sweets too.
He doesn't have them often but occasionally when he's near me and I have a tastycake (vanilla) or a pop-tart I will give him some real small pieces.

Milly likes sweets, and she will sneak around to get them too! Earlier this year, my parents were staying with us, and they bought some fudge. Against my advice, they offered a bit to Milly, who thought, yum yum.....When they saw how keen she was on it (trying to steal the bag) they took the fudge upstairs, and shut it in the spare room, in my Dad's bag. Well, Milly watched this with great interest, and must have sneaked upstairs with Dad the next time he went into the room. She must have sneaked, as normally she goes up the stairs sounding like a herd of elephants. Later on, it was the cats' teatime, and I called them, and called them Daisy appeared, but no Milly. How odd, I thought, this is not like her to miss a meal! So the search began, and yes, there she was, in the spare bedroom, scarfing down fudge as quick as she could. We are always very careful about leaving no food available to the cats, and also checking to see that they are not shut into a room on their own, but Dad is not used to dealing with a conniving, sneaky cat like Milly! However, I doubt he'll forget the fudge incident, so hopefully there will be no more opportunity for Milly to steal like that!

Very shortly after I got Spot, I discovered that he liked cookies. He stole two chocolate chip cookies from the package on the counter. Since my other cat doesn't go onto the counters anymore, I didn't even think that he might go after them. Several years ago, we left Willow alone in an apartment with some lemon cupcakes. She took bites out of a couple of them after dragging them off of the counter. My mom's cat Hannah, also has a thing for fruit. She loves dried apricots and will gnaw on your finger if you put a little bit on there. I guess kitties do like sweets after all.
