Is there anyone else out there who seems to hate exercise as much as I do? I thought maybe if I could find people on this board who hate it as much as I do, perhaps we could goad each other on this thread and do a little better.

Though I don't need to lose weight, I know I need exercise. I'm on meds to get my blood pressure and cholesterol down, but I could probably take lower doses or maybe get off them entirely if I just could force myself to get an adequate amount of exercise regularly. My heart rate is higher than it should be. My joints are beginning to freeze with arthritis from lack of movement.

Three times (about every 20 years) I have bought an exercise bike, but my ambition to use it only lasted about a week or two, and I sold it or gave it away after a few years. I've taken a couple of exercise classes over the years, only to stop exercising altogether as soon as the class is over. I've bought some polka CDs, thinking that the easiest way for me to get some exercise is to put on some music and dance around the house, but I don't even do that very often. So maybe what I need is a virtual dancing partner.

Anyone else out there willing to join me in an "I Hate Exercise" exercise club? You can do any form of exercise you wish and report back here. If a club member doesn't report back within a reasonable time, we could PM her other asking how she is doing. Any other ideas of how to try to encourage each other to get moving are welcome.

one year ago I was so good. I had joined a gym and was going at least 4 days a week. I was doing the eliptical and i was in a weight training class.

That all fell apart this summer. I moved and canceled my gym membership and stopped excercising. I wouldn't mind excercising if I had more time on my hands. I think its the time issue for me.

I would LOVE to join this club and get back on track. I don't need to lose a lot of weight. 5 - 10 lbs. and I'd be set.

I was not gonna start until after the new year, but if there are others ready to be motivated and start up this club now I suppose now is as good a time as ever to start back up.

Let's put on our sneakers and get goin'

I have a chronic respiratory condition. I had a doctor's appointment the other day, and I was told that I should set a goal of going for a 1/2 hour walk every day because that will help strengthen my heart and lungs. I will be going for one of these walks today, but since it's cold outside this time of year, it's going to be hard to meet this goal.
I'm really not sure if I qualify for this club or not.

You might be able to find a used treadmill from someone, new ones are pretty expensive (well the have some at Wal Mart for $200) but I went to a sporting goods store called "Play it Again Sports" and they sell some used equipment, we bought a nice ProForm Treadmill for $500. Just remember it is for your health, and you would have no excuse to not get on it and walk!

When the children were little I used to walk 3 to 4 miles a day - going to fetch them from school. I like walking and I was quite fit then. Now I work and the children have grown up I don't get to do that and I'm not fit. although I like walking I hate other forms of exercise.

Well, I joined Curves a year ago and really loved it. It's an all women's gym - no frills though. It's circiut training that is only supossed to take 1/2 hour. I go around 3 times rather than the recommended 2 1/2 times, so it takes me a little longer.

Here's the problem: I quit going. They are not open on weekends and close at 7PM. My dad broke his hip and ended up in a nursing home for 3 months, so I was stopping to see him after work every day. He got out and I went back to Curves for a few months. THEN came the Florida hurricanes. I ended up working late for awhile (we do water damage & mold damage restoration) and couldn't get to Curves on time.

NOW thats all overwith, but I lost the motivation. Thanks for this thread, maybe it will HELP!

You can sometimes get free treadmills from your local freecycle list. We've had 3 make the rounds since Thanksgiving out here in San Diego. Try it first since exercise equipment is so expensive, but remember to offer something too.

Movin' on up!
I hate exercise and a lot of exercises aggravate my arthritis. After the first of the year, I'm signing up for a line dance class. Its good exercise and its FUN! Most of all, it doesn't hurt.

I wanted the water aerobics class (no impact) but couldn't find one compatible with my work schedule.

Oh, I'm glad not to be exercising alone! I know there are many other places on the web that do exercise, but it is more fun to do it with a group from the place I frequent most on the web. Besides, most of the other places I've seen either focus on weight loss (which I don't need) or they seem to be people who actually ENJOY exercise. Horrors! I'd love to get to that point, but I definitely want people around who can appreciate that I'm not there yet!

Let's plan on checking in with what we've done as often as each person feels they need to keep motivated, and no less than once a week. How does that sound?

My goal for the next week is to exercise a minimum of three days. (That's three more than I have been doing.) I don't want to set my goals so high that I get immediately discouraged if I don't meet them, but of course I'd be delighted if I manage to exercise more often than that. And whooppee! I just got my first day in of dancing and doing exercises to music.

What are your goals?

I think three days a week is a good place to start! I want to start by just getting cardio in. 3 days -- 30 min. sessions. We have a pretty decent workout room at our apartment complex so I'll see if i can get in 3 days of 30 minutes of something in there.

Thanks for the initial motivation boost twofatcats. I wasn't gonna start till Jan. 1, but now is as good a time as any! Keep me posted

I got my first day of exercise in too, I went for a 30 minute walk (but it was kind of cold). There are a couple of fitness places where I live, so I should be able to join one of them and use their treadmill.

Last month, I signed up at Lifetime Fitness. It's $39.99/month, but it is worth it to me. They have no contracts, it's pay as you go, but I had to pay an initiation fee, but included in that was a box of vitams (2 bottles worth), some protein shake packages, and a protein bar. Also, included in that was a visit with a personal trainer, in which ever 2 months you get re-evaluated, free nutrional classes, access to raquetball classes when no one is using them, access to pools & jacuzi, locker room. I go 3 times a week. The 1st week was hard .. my heartrate would shoot up high, and then after 15 minutes, it would almost crash. So, I talked with a personal trainer, and he guided me in the right direction. I do 30 minutes on a treadmill, then the last 30-45 is weights. I havent gone for 2 weeks though, because all last week (week after Thanksgiving) I was sick, and am still coughing. So, I will have to start today or tomorrow again, but no biggie. When I was @ dr, it showed I lost 4 lbs, but it seems like I have lost more than that.. either that or its inches, os that gives me the motivation to go, Plus, I go right after work on the way home.

I don't need to loose weight - just excersise and get fit. My goal is 30 minutes walking a day, and if it's raining well pace the hallway! I love excerising.

Well, it's cold outside today, and very windy. We're having wind gusts as high as 50 mph, and maybe even a little higher, so it's not a good day for walking outside at all.

But...I didn't let that stop me. Since I don't have any alternative arrangements in place yet, I just walked around inside my house for 30 minutes without stopping. It was hard to do because my house is so small, but I figured it was better than nothing.
And I'm motivated to do whatever it takes to improve my health.

Lorie,

YOu can use cans of veggies, soup, or whatever you have as cans, and use them as dumbells & walk around with them in your hands as you walk. I used to do that.
