Oh Cheryl - what awful news
. I'm sorry that you, your sister and your family are having a hard time right now. I'll be keeping my thoughts with you that the procedure goes smoothly and the tumour turns out to be benign. A friend of mine was diagnosed with a malignant tumour a year ago (he's about 60) and they can do so much without too much invasive surgery now - all kinds of things like laser treatment - his tumour has gone and
it won't be coming back.

Very best wishes and "get well soon" vibes to you all and your sister

Please let us know how she goes on.

How scary for you. I'm so sorry you have to go through all this.
Your poor sister....
My best friend's mom, who cared for me as a mom (now we're sisters) had a brain tumor. She said she saw Heaven, and G-d asked her if she wanted to live, or is she wanted to be with Him in Heaven. She made it. She's bigger, and has some emotional problems, but she's fine. She is extremly religious now.
I hope everything will be okay. Big
to you and and your sister. Hopes, prayers and vibes coming you way.

12/11/04 Update

First I'd like to say, reading all these replies was truly heartwarming, helpful, and so touching it brought me to more tears! (Didn't know I had any left. Thought I was dehydrated actually. All the stories that were shared from all of you helped in so many ways. Especially since you trusted me with your times of trouble to see me through mine. Thanks to all of you so so much. Especially for the hugs, prayers, thoughts, and beautiful inspiring words.

My sister's name is Dorothy, married, and has two daughters, 18 and 13 years old.

Doctors said it's a "meningioma" tumor of the brain. Which is a benign, slow-growing tumor of the meninges (whatever all those words mean, right?) One is the size of an egg that's over her left eye and appears to have drained forming 4 smaller ones, the size of grapes (everything is compared to food apparently) behind her left eye. One is in her eye muscle.

On Tuesday or Wednesday they will be sawing into her skull, through the top of her hairline, a square opening, removing the tumor(s). The smaller ones may have to have an eye surgeon called in, in the middle of surgery, since the neuro-surgeon can't touch that area since he specializes in brain tumors. So they're coinciding both doctors' schedules to do one surgery, instead of the possibility of two, in case the eye may need to be operated on. It takes approximately 3 hours to complete from start to finish.

They said it must be removed or will keep growing into her brain and can cause nerve damage, facial numbness, spinal problems, blindness, just to name a few. It has a high success recovery prognosis. She'll be "heavily" sedated 2-3 days after surgery to keep her head still, preventing fluid from forming around her brain. Since they are opening the skull, fluid starts to form immediately, so they do it as quickly, precisely, and effectively as they can to prevent further problems. There's a one week recovery in the hospital and is expected to be home 12/22/04. Then a one month recovery at home.

There's more questions to ask the doctor tomorrow. I'll fill all of you in as I find things out. Love to all of you, sincerely, on this site! You really feel like family, you guys are the best!

Cheryl thanks for the update. It sounds as if, serious as this is, there's good reason to be hopeful -- so we just pour on the good vibes and lots of prayers, for the skill of the surgeons, for Dorothy's resilience, and for your calm and peace throughout the ordeal.
Please do keep us posted.
