Hello all,

I have come to you for your advice and opinion. Yesterday when I got home, and cleaned out the litter box, there was the usual number of urine clumps, but tonight there was a ton of poop.

Anyway I cleaned it out, and then coco came in after i was done, and went poo again (it looked half solid half soft) ten minutes later he went in again and this time there were only 3 little drops...when he was done i notice one of the drops was reddish, so i took it out right away before coco could cover it up. I examined it under a light, and noticed it was red like blood, but mucusy, but had a little brown in it...,

What could this mean, or be from????? I am really worried. Other than that behaviour is normal, active as usual, appetite is usual (always eats like he is being starved,,,,,,and beleive me HE ISNT

Is it possible that the food is bothering him??? Right now he is finishing off a bag the vet prescribed for crystals (Medi-Cal dissolution). His regular food is Medi-Cal preventative which i am adding in to the remainder of the dissolution.

My poor man, was in such bad shape when I rescued him and had fleas, worms, uri and uti when i rescued him, and i thought now after the 2 months i ve had him he was on the right track......Please Help, Im scared for my little man.

Does your kitty go outdoors? It's possible he's got a parasite (worms). It's also possible that he ate something that didn't agree with him ( a bug, a new food). I'm not familiar with the food you mentioned - maybe he's become allergic to some ingredient in it. The bit of red you saw is probably from irritation due to "going" so much.

Since he's acting normally otherwise, keep an eye on him today. This may just run its course. If it continues, you should call your vet and ask his/her advice. They may want you to bring in a stool sample to be tested for parasites.

Your little boy is adorable - I hope he's back to normal soon!

Run a fecal into your vet and have them tell you what is wrong. It could be parasites (yes again) If you are not putting advantage or frontline on your cat and the cat has fleas the cat will also get tapeworms- that's a given

Thank you for replying...I just love him to pieces.

It cant be worms, I sent in a recheck fecal to the vets and 2 days ago i was advised it came back negative.

As for the foof, it is a good quality food veternarian recommended, but maybe ...i dunno. I will ask the vet on thursday when coco goes in for his shot.

maybe there is some reddish stuff in the cat food
if you still have the poop it might be wise to take it to the vet to get it examined.

No the cat food does not contain any artificial colors, so i dont think it could be that

It sounds like coccidia. Sometimes, this isn't readily visible in the stool sample and it could be that your vet missed it the first time. Take in a sample and ask him to look specifically for coccidia.

Hope this helps,

Last night I was laying in bed and heard coco scratching aroud in his litter box, and then started crying

I got out of bed quick because I wanted to see why. The crying is coming when he is pooping...

Is this also a sign of coccidia??? Poor little man, he has had so many problems and I have only had him for 2 months.

I know you recently had a fecal done that came back negative but as Gayef suggested, maybe you should bring in another to be tested specifically for coccidia.

If his stools are very hard, it could be painful for him when he's trying to eliminate, which may account for him crying. You can add fiber to his diet if that's the case.

If you rule out any chance of worms, the other possibilities that come to mind are food allergy, irritable bowel disease, or pancreatitis - none of them easy to diagnose.

Try to give him the best quality food possible - no by-products, artificial colors or preservatives, no wheat or corn. Sometimes foods with lots of carbs, especially dry food, can be hard for cats to digest. Some cats also have problems digesting beef, and can develop allergies to it as well.

It might help putting him on a bland diet for a day or two to let his system relax a bit. You could use plain roasted or boiled chicken with some liquid added to it - just use water or plain (no salt, no onion) broth.

I hope Coco's feeling better soon.

His stool is not very hard at all, between soft and hard.
