jesus--liberal or conservative?

I know this election had a lot of religious issues and it was obvious that christians seemed to side with a more conservative stance... I chose my political beliefs based on my christian religious beliefs but I felt that being christian I had an obligation to vote liberal..

So what is your opinion, Jesus as flaming liberal or conservative?

And of course we'll never know and most of what we heard is probably inaccurate but this may help people (like me!) believe what they do when it comes to politics.

JMHO, but when I hear some of the right-wing 'Christian' leaders ranting, I can't help but think of the Pharisees.

I didn't vote for any of your options because I would never ever act like I "knew" Jesus....why in the world would I put Him in a box like that?? There are people who believe in Him that are liberal, there are people who believe in Him that are conservative.

In all actuality, Jesus was a-political. He pretty much made a point to stay out of politics all together. "Give to God what is God's, give to Caesar what is Caesar's"

Here's the thing, people who are more liberal minded will see him as liberal minded also, based on his social teachings, helping the poor, etc. People who are more conservative minded will see him also as conservative based on moral issues presented in the Bible. One of the beautiful things about The Bible and religion - you can interpret it to fit just about any point of view, and you aren't necessarily wrong no matter the conclusion.

believe me it drove me completely nuts when religion was brought into the election because i always thought that they should be seperate.. But it WAS brought in, and that's why I want to know why everyone thinks that christian beliefs support a more right wing stance because really i just don't see how tht could be possible.

I really think you can blame that on people like Jerry Falwell and the (former) Moral Majority. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Falwell
He gave fundamentalism a bad name, IMO.

It goes back further than Falwell. I am reading a great book now about the rise of the religious right called "With God on our Side". It's so interesting.

Billy Graham was a big part of it, but it even goes back to after WW2 and the first radio evangelists.

Another interesting note from teh book, the Puritans, who everyone is saying set the tone for religion being the center of this country, KNEW to separate church and state. They knew it kept religion more pure and was good for the state.
Clergy couldn't hold city offices etc.
Seems that little fact is swept away these days.

I agree but this is why it and state should be separate.

Also there is a big difference between the old testiment and the new.

This reminds me of the joke relating to what would happen is Bush ran against Jesus.

bumpy, I felt weird reading it. "Jesus is wrong for you" is going to offend a lot of people (even if it is just a joke).
