I'm getting married next year, and ever the planner, I was wondering what would be best to do with my cat while I'm away on my honeymoon. I will be gone for at least ten days. My cat is very sensitive, and I don't want to put her in a kennel. My mom (who lives three hours away) has offered to let my cat stay with her the whole time. The only problem is Sandy, HER cat who hasn't liked my cat when I brought her home. What would be best? Thanks!

Have you considered a petsitter. Either one who comes and stays for an hour or 2 or one who stays over at your house. I opt for the one staying. This way, while you're away, you don't have to worry about the possibility of someone breaking in, there's someone already there. You can ask your vet for a reference or look for one in the back of Cat Fancy in the advertising section.

I thought about this. Have you ever used one? My cat seems to get lonely while I'm away, and I'm wondering if having a stranger come over for a short while is the best way--Can anyone tell me your experiences?

Yes, I've used them myself (actually one of my vet's techs until my friend started her own business and that's who I use now when hubby and I go away) and use to own a pet sitting business myself. All of my clients had no problem and their cats were very happy. I was not able to stay with them all the time, but twice a day and an hour or two at each visit, was good. I also worked a full time job but loved taking care of them.

I always have someone come and stay at the house. It works best for me bacause then I dont worry about the house burning down, the cats getting lonley and I know everyone will be okay. If you do look into it, you can call local vets and see if any of the techs do this on the side. Or you can call a service. It helps too if you can sit down to do an "interview" with them prior.

I used to have a wonderful professional pet sitter. She knew more about cats than most vets! She administered medications, played with, scooped, fed, etc the cats several times each day. She was so wonderful that I had her keep a key to my house so that I would just have to give her a call and she could be there (great for snow storms or other emergencies when I couldn't make it home). Sadly, when I moved to a new tiny town I wasn't able to find a professional cat sitter, so I have the neighbor's child take care of them. The girl loooooves the cats and mom always comes to make sure its done right.
