I just got a new kitten about a week ago, at first it was hell because my current cat jess didnt like the new kitten at all, but after a few days of been seperated jess started to open the bedroom door to let the kitten out because it was always crying and didnt like to be left alone. now the kitten and jess are always playing but sometimes jess hisses and growls at the kitten. its been over a week now and jess doesnt seem to be the same anymore she seems to be scared of the kitten from time to time, she wont eat her food when the kitten is eating his food and when he is eating she sometimes goes up to him and she smells his tail but hisses and growls at the same time. she is always on her guard all the time, and i dont know what to do to reasure she and to tell her that this behavior cant go on. sometimes jess wont let me handle her she sometimes attacks, im very concerned for her please could someone help me and advised me on what i should do.

Could Jess be feeling motherly and protective of the new kitten? Some cats are very maternal, that may be why she is a bit off with you. The fact that Jess is smelling the kitten's backside suggests maternal behaviour to me. The hissing and growling coul dbe her bossing your kitten about.

One week is a very short time for them to get used to each other, and it sounds as if they are establishing a relationship just fine. At least they are not killing each other! I would not worry - Jess is telling the kitten what is what and they are getting used to new smells and sounds. I am sure htey will be fine.
