Hey guys! I have a 4 months old kitten and I've been feeding her Pro Plan canned kitten food and Hill's Science Diet dry kitten food. I was just wondering what your opinions were on there brands and if you know anything about them that I should know. Also, with the canned food I buy 3 different flavors so she isn't eating the exact same thing everyday. This is okay right? Lemme know guys
thnx!

Both are good products. I do not feed my cats canned food due to probable tartar build-up and a stinky litter box due to canned food. For dry, I am having good results with Purina One Growth (kitten).

Hi,

I know that both these brands are well known, and have had a good rep, but I would not feed either brand.

Here is why - the two flavors of Pro Plan Canned kitten that I took a look at tonight - one contains by-products and artificial flavors, the second contained by products, artificial flavors, soy flour and soy protein concentrate. I do not consider those to be premium food ingredients, nor the best quality food for a kitten or cat.

The Hills Science Diet Feline Growth dry has the following as it's first ingredients: "Chicken by-product meal, corn meal, animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), corn gluten meal,
brewers rice, chicken liver flavor, dried egg product, L-lysine, soybean mill run", this can not compare to a dry food such as Felidae, or California Natural Chicken and Rice, PetGuard or Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care.

Also worthy of consideration is Innova, and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul.

Fwiw, the belief that a canned food diet causes dental problems and is not recommended is changing, here is a link to a good article by a veterinarian on this:

I feed only canned. I feed my kitten Chicken Soup canned kitten food and Wellness canned kitten food. I feed my adults canned Wellness and canned Merrick. These foods are only available at smaller pet stores but they are much better and worth the trouble to find. Wellness has garlic, which some object to, but I will feed it until I find documentation of Heinz body anemia in a cat fed it.
Innova, Evolve, Eagle Pack and Felidae are other good brands. The only brands from Petco I would even consider are Natural Balance and maybe Nutro Natural Choice. Not wild about the Nutro but I fed it once when I ran out and it was too late to go to the regular pet store. Becky
