When Meish cleans herself she chews her fur and makes this terrible snort/grunt sound!! Its so funny
but I want to know if that is a normal part of grooming...

... great here she goes with the 'i have fur in my throat' swallow... time for some hairball remedy.

I have heard this a couple times as well, mainly with our long hair Onyx.

Meish is long hair... I've checked and re checked her for fleas (none). It's just to disturbing to see her chewing her back or her rear end. I won't get into the comments my husband makes LOL

Perhaps an allergy that is making her skin itchey? Is the skin flakey or raw? Some foods can cause such an allergy.

She isn't chewing herself constantly. It is only when she cleans herself.

I haven't changed her food, she gets science diet.

She does have occasional flakes on her fur but they go away with daily brusing from the increase in oils.

My father said that his cat does it and he things its matts in the fur?

I find the more I brush my long hair cat the less he does that. I think it is a way of getting rough spots smooth, so if I take care of it 1st there generally is no problem.

Penelope snorts a little bit when she grooms and she's a short-haired cat. So, I don't know. BTW, Susan, I LOVE your new siggy!!

Molly does this too! Tibby doesn't (or I haven't noticed!) I believe that it is to remove any matted fur that they have found.

I like Susan's explanation of it being their way of exfoliating!
Nice analogy!

Meeko does the same thing you've described sometimes! And he is shorthaired!
