The dog next door has been barking for 4 hours. Four long loud hours. I have gone over twice but no one is home. I didn't even know they had a dog. I tried yelling at him to be quiet but he just barked louder. The cats were worried at first but they have given up trying to see him out the window and have gone to sleep. I hope he gives up before I go to bed. It is really cold here, well, cold for us, 47, and it is raining. I wonder if he has a dog house out there. Becky

Imagine how the dog feels being left outside not knowing if anyone is home! He's probably wondering why they left him out in the rain, or if they aren't home, he probably wants to come in, and don't know why they're ignoring him. I'd be barking too, if I were the dog

I wonder why people don't leave their dogs inside when they leave home. Cats just sleep when the people are gone, don't dogs? Poor guy is probably cold and wet, but I can't help him. At least not tonight. I fully intend to go speak to his people tomorrow. They have lived there awhile so I think they just got him. So he is in a strange place, left alone, and its cold and wet. Porrt guy. Becky

My dog can't be left alone in the house for longer than an hour. He eats everything!!!!
I love him though.

He doesn't bark unless somebody strange is around and he shuts up as soon as they leave.
He's a good watch dog. I think that the dog next to you must be new and scared to be in a strange place. Just do like you said and have a chat with them tomorrow. If they are new to dogs, they might not have thought about him being scared and distrubing you.

Hope everything works out.

Thanks, he is still barking. The bad thing is, my house is at the back of the lot, right next to their back yard. Maybe he will be quiet if I go to bed and turn out the lights. Then he will think the "strangers" have gone away. Becky

Movin' on up!
If talking to them doesn't work, call Animal Control and file a nuisance complaint. Its a last resort but, the dog needs to be properly cared for.

yeah well dont file a complaint untill they do it again though.
and After you have spoken to them.
dont cause stress, only because its a new dog poor thing its lonely and scared just like cats and people are when they are new to a place.
But he should have a dog kennel to keep him warm and out of the rain!
silley people!!!

If you get no results with the owners, contact your local animal control for advice. Dog barking is treated as "noise" in most California locations. I used to work for a city animal control in San Diego County and know their laws. Your municipality may differ.

Good luck,

Been there. Only this dog (neighbor across the road) was allowed to run all over and on one occasion came across the highway to stand in OUR yard and bark and snarl at us!

I believe the neighbors just south of me did call and complain after a 2 hour barking marathon.

Anyway, the barking only stopped after the dumb dog ran into the road and was killed. They moved and the new people have 2 dogs who always bark when we are in our yard, but at least they are confined by an invisible fence system. (Which does no good after a power outage!)

Yuk, I also have "been there". We have a dog next door that sometimes barks for a LOOOOONG time before he shuts up and the neighbors just seem to go "deaf" while he is doing it....grrrrrrrrrrrr

I went over after work. It wasn't their dog, they were doggy sitting. Very apologetic, said they would never doggy sit again. Very nice young man. That dog barked from 4:30 until 11:00. Yawn. Becky
