I am supposed to get a kitten from a breeder, and they e-mailed me today and said that their cat had a false pregnancy, is this common? They do have another female due in amonth so I will get on of her kittens. Just curious!

My dog had a false pregnancy once, it made her mothering instincts go into high gear. She "adopted" a squeaky rubber duck and carried it everywhere for weeks. She made a nest for her "baby", spent hours grooming it, and if someone squeezed it, making it squeak, she came running to make sure it was okay. Once her body got its hormones sorted out, she lost her protectiveness for the duck and used it as a chew toy. I don't know if it's a similar process in cats, but I know it's not that uncommon in dogs. I've heard that some dogs go as far as producing milk.

I have heard of the false pregnancy alot more in dogs, I am actually more familiar with dogs because I grew up with only dogs...(mom was allergic to cats)....This is my first cat from a breeder, so I am relatively new to this...I do have a cat 2 yr old DSH, but he is a male.....

My cat MyRage(Mirage) would have had kittens two days ago, but there weren't any inside her. She is even lactating. I'm not sure how common it is really, but it was the weirdest thing, to see her go through that.

The breeder was sure she was pregnant, espeacially because she was doing the lactating thing, but there were no kittens, and this is an experienced breeder!

we were all dumbfounded over MyRage also. I was back and fourth. She had all the signs of pregnancy, right down to the morning sickness. She should have delivered on the 23rd or so, but never did. She even gained weight. She's doing good with her kittens now though. She is fostering some for the dog and cat shelter

False pregnancy can happen when a breeding occures but pregnancy does not. It isnt very commen in cats but can happen. It is more commen in dogs. It isnt anything the breeder did or didnt do. Just the way it worked out. Enjoy your new kitten when you get it! What breed are you getting?
