I have a problem. My kitty (about 8 months old) will eat all day. He has eaten about 24 days of food in a 72 hour period of time. I called the vet am taking him in tomorrow. Do any of you know why he might be eating so much? (we normally do not give him that much food to eat but we wanted to know if he would stop himself when he got full...he doesn't, he just has potty emergencies and goes right back to eating.) Oh, and he isn't losing any weight, instead he is gaining alot! HELP!!!

I'm glad you're taking him to the vet. Eating like this can be a sign of hyperthroidism or adrenal gland problems. Very rarely, it can be a sign of a brain injury. My bet would be on a problem with the thyroid.

Sandie will probably have other ideas when she checks in.

Hmmm....Well as far as I know the few things I know that it can indicate are Hyperthyroidism, diabetes and some cancers. Cats normally are really good about eating just what they need. Obesity is usually due to lack of exercise or a very slow metabolism. I am sure the vet will run all the tests to rule all possibilities out. I do know that they found the best test for felines to check for a thyroid problem is a free T4.

thanks for the advice. I'll wait to see what the vet says and let you all know. Thanks again.

Eating that much food and not putting on weight sounds a lot like a tapeworm or other stomach parasite. The vet will know for sure.
