I need advice on kitten care. We rescued a kitten from inside a customer's car hood today at work. She(or he?) appears to be about 2 months old, but I am not sure. I brought her home tonight and have an appointment with the vet in the morning. I am secluding her from my two cats until I find out if she is healthy or not. What should I feed her tonight? Litterbox? My 2 girls were 1 and 2 when I got them so I am clueless on kitten care. Please help me!

Hi! How wonderful you were able to save this kitten! I know our kitten advisor will comment as soon as she sees this, but in the meantime..yes, do feed her. Try a can of Friskies Kitten Food, most grocery stores have this in their cat food aisle...or any canned food labelled for kittens (or there is a recipe for Kitten Glop that I know someone will post a link to for you). Give her a low small dish of water (i never like using large bowls until I'm sure a kitten isn't going to go fishing and land headfirst in the bowl)..something she can't fall into.

Yes....set up a litter box...you can use a low edged one that you feel the kitten can get into. Place the kitten into the box within 15 to 20 minutes of eating..it may help her get the hint, and that is usually when they need to go (from my days of helping "mom" litter train her kittens)...use an unscented litter...since the kitten may taste test it (even better would be swheat scoop or world's best cat litter, they are grain based and without prettily colored chemical deoderizing bits)

Actually, silly me...someone will post a link to a great kitten site...I'm not on my own computer, so don't have access to my notes (and my memory doesn't always co-operate!).

best wishes with this little one...are you doing temporary care or will you be keeping her?

Hi KSCatGirl79

First of all you need a litter box and at this point I would say one would be enough . Lock her in the bathroom if you can , in case she is not used to a litter box . That way it is easy on you to sanitise after you let her out and in case she has an accident . If you can get kitten food tonight feed her some of that and if not just feed her what you have for today. By the vet you can ask what the best would be for her to eat .

Thank you for saving the kitten

Thank you all for your advice. I ran to the store and picked up some kitten chow. I gave her about a 1/4 a cup mositened and she ate about 1/2 that. Didn't drink much of the water. I tried setting her in the makeshift litter box I found using a baking dish but she didn't seem interested. I'll try that again in a bit. She goes to the vet in the morning to get a checkup. I do plan to keep her if there aren't any sicknesses she picked up outside that can't be cured. If she does(pray she doesn't) my best friend has been wanting to adopt a kitten and she said she wanted her if I couldn't keep her. Again thank you for your help.

Hi, let us know if you have any more questions about this kitten. The vet will be able to tell you how old the kitten is and you'll be able to compare that with the ages and what to expect down the left-hand-side of the pages on that link. Good luck with her.
