My 9 month old cat was killed by a car two days ago. The vet said that he was killed instantly but I think she would have said this no matter what. I'm haunted by the possibilities. His back legs and hips and one front paw were broken. He was found just off the footpath in someones doorway. His eyes were open. I know this might sound morbid but I need to know if he suffered. Can someone please shed light on the circumstances and condition in which I found my cat. The whole thing is made worse by the death of my 13 year old cat one week ago. She had cancer and was put to sleep. I can't quite grasp the magnitude of what has happened to me in the last week.

Sadly this is a heart wrenching time for you and only time is going to help heal the sorrow.
The vet is probably right.. Because of where you say the damage was nerves could have been severed along with other internal issues and this would stop signals going to the brain.
The eyes being open could be that the cat did not even have time to close them before it passed over which is a good thing. Traumatic and awful that the incident was at least if it was fast the cat would have not known anything other than a bang with no pain......
As for the position you will not know if it was flung there by the impact or if someone placed it there and it is not a thing you should dwell on.................
There is a site her that I recommend you visit. It can bring nothing back but it can help you in your sorrows..

My vet told me that when an animal gets hit by a car two things happen. One right before the impact, they experience a blackout time, he called it a white flash. It happens so quickly they never know what hit them.
When one of my cats recently got hit and made it in the house where she waited till morning for us to say goodbye to her, my vet said she didn't suffer. That there was a point where she moved past pain to an almost unconscious state. I know my vet well, he would not tell me this if it were not true. He was not trying to placate me, he was giving me answers directly. I would like to think that Blink was given this place where visions, not pain clouded her head. It still rips me up to think that she met her end like this, and I would give anything to turn the clock back, and be the one in the road instead of her.

Your memory of your cat right now is how you viewed him in death- celebrate his life instead, even though it was brief. Blink was the same age as your kitty when she died. It took weeks for me to get that final image out of my head-

Loving my beautiful baby girl
I'm so sorry you lost your two dear friends, especially in such a short period of time. How much sorrow can one person possibly endure. Your heart must be shattered. Nothing I can say will ease your pain, but please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry. It's so hard to lose a beloved cat, but to lose two so close together must be devastating.

Do you have pictures of your kitty? Perhaps it might help to spend time looking at those, visualizing him happy & purring where he liked to sit. I used to go & rest my head on my cat's favorite corner of the couch, & it felt like I could still hear and feel her purr - it was very comforting, and helped me to visualize her happy and comfortable, sitting in a sunbeam over the Bridge. Writing out your thoughts and happy memories can sometimes help too.

My thoughts & prayers are with you, and your two sweet babies over the Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you everyone for replying so quickly. It's great to talk to people who understand as when it comes to cats most people really don't. Another aspect of the story is that we are moving this weekend and Derek would of course have been coming with us. At the moment I live in a ground floor apartment in the middle of Dublin. I didn't actually choose to bring a cat into this environment, I rescued him from the road. His mother had been hit by a car!! He was so small I had to feed him with a dropper. I was always worried about the fact that I live near to busy roads and I'm really devastated by the fact that this happened so close to the move. My 13 year old cat lived at home with my parents in an area much more suited to cats. Their deaths were completely unrelated, I can't believe they happened so close together. I'm never getting another cat.

I'm so sorry to hear about what had recently occurred. Although they aren't with you anymore (which is the most heart-wrenching aspect of it all), at least they are together. It's unfortunate when tragedies like this happen - bad things happen in multiples in my family - but I would never, ever say that I'm never getting another cat. I always remember the love and affection given to me, and although bittersweet, it's something I could never live without (a long time ago I said, "I'll never live without cats in my home!" and I'm planning on keeping my word!).

I am so sorry that you have lost two kitties in such a short time, you must be heartbroken and I can understand why you say you will never have another cat. I said the same thing last year, and now I have four. Give yourself time. Derek will be sending you his love.

I think that sometimes cats choose us. Only once have I gone out of my way to bring a cat into my life. That cat had to be put to sleep after a mysterious accident shattered his pelvis. Not two months later, a cat wandered into our lives. She became my absolute best friend in the whole world. Another cat wandered in a few years later and now he and my son are inseperable. A week before the death (from kidney disease) of my best cat friend, a little kitten appeared at our door. I truly believe that we are given the opportunity to embrace love when we need it in our lives. It wasn't just chance that brought these cats to us. The "powers that be" knew we needed them in our lives. It's a big idea to grasp, but I know that it is true. Someone is watching out for us, and for all living things.

I think that I know a little of the agonizing pain that you are going through right now. I know what it is like to loose one cat. Two must be beyond bearable. I am so sorry for your great loss.
