Hi All,
So my little boy seemed okay when I got home from a weekend away. My neighbours came twice a day to feed and play with him so I knew he was in good hands. Last night when I came home he seemed happy enough, but today (the next day) I came home from work, only to find that he had left a little smelly "present" for me under my work table. He has NEVER done this before.
I was just curious about any insight into how cat's react this way emotionally. As a human, I interpreted this behaviour as him being mad at me, but do cats really think that way??
I didn't want to be mad at him because it seemed he knew he had done something wrong anyway...
Still- it seemed very calculated on his behalf. And I do want to be able to go away for a weekend without this happening!
Any thoughts on this behaviour?
I really love my cat!!!! I was sad to leave him for the weekend.
Thanks!!

He could have been so stressed out by your absence that he has come down ill. If he does it again, I would get him to a vet. It could also be that whoever cared for him didn't clean the litter pan to his liking. I would change to fresh litter and see if that helps. I would also spend some time with him one-on-one playing with him with a toy on a string or a stick- peacock feathers are really good for this.

Thanks! He actually seems in good health- eating well at least, and the kitty litter is perfectly clean! Any chance he would have done this because he was mad? I am giving him lots of attention now!!

GStein...I'd follow Hissy's advice...a trip to the vet will rule out anything medical.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am not a huge fan of taking my cat to the vet in this situation as it is very traumatic for him and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him. The reason for my post (in the behaviour section rather than the health situation) was to get a sense if anyone thought this was behavioral rather than physical? I know my cat pretty well to know when he is not well (although I will be sure to monitor him) so wanted some feedback as to other experiences regarding this. I really believe this was done by my cat for emotional reasons as he is pretty sensitive....and I love him so much, I may have created a cat who just doesn't like being without me!

Well...and then again...Hissy's advice was if he did it again (even I missed this on my first read through)...so as long as he is using the litterbox regularly from this point forward..sounds like a vet visit won't be in order. And Hissy is recommending fresh litter and one on one time.

I've often heard about cats that do this once each time there's an extended time away from their owners. It's sort of as if to say, " I neeed you" or "You left me behinnnd!" I know my dachshund (who thought he was a cat) used to do this when we came back from trips.
