Hey Ya'll

I think I made a decision(lol). Well I made a post about my one cat, and how I'm always working and going to school and what I should do. I gave it some thought about getting a new kitten/cat and I should be able to afford it. My cat that I have now is like 1 years old, or 1 1/2 years old. Now my question to ya'll is, should I get a kitten. This is going to be a stupid question, but at what age is the cat considered a cat and not a kitten. Apple bottom is my very first pet, and I have had her for like 3 months, and I just feel so bad leaving her at home by herself. But also I have a one bedroom and one bath room apartment. it is 870 sq. feet. Do you think that is to small to have 2 cats. Ok thanks for putting up with all my questions

Nicole,

If the landlord is willing to let you have a second cat and (most important) your budget will cover food and vet bills, then I say get one! I've lived in smaller apartments with 2 cats. My first roommate and I shared a 1 bedroom with 3.

Hi Nicole, when it comes down to it, only you can decide and know if two cats is OK for you. I didn't think I could cope with four, but I have done and wouldn't do without one of them. You have been thinking sensibly about you and I'm sure you will make the right decision. Some people count kittens as being anything up to 12 months old, but what the real age is I have no idea, could be more.

HAHAHA!!! It all depends on what you are comfortable with. I lived in a place smaller than that and had 22 cats...all indoors...it wasn't comfortable and my ex and I ended up finding home for more than half of them.

2 cats and u in one bedroom/1 bathroom apt is not too small!
I live in a 1 bedroom/1bathroom apt with FOUR cats.
I made sure the apt is big enough so the cats can run, move around and play in. I have 3 scratching posts, 2 cat posts, 3 cat litterboxes, zillions of toys and 3 baskets for them to sleep in. That's another thing u need to take into consideration- if there's enough room for 2 cats to run around in, have 1-2 litterboxes (at least 2 are recommended), and have playing stuff (condos, scratching posts, etc)..

If u can afford it, I'd encourage u to get another cat so they can keep each other company while u're away from home. It helps me a lot knowing that my 4 cats have each other for company while I'm at work or out...

We have the same size of apartment out here, and it's plenty big for both of our girls. One tip is to get a piece of cat furniture so they have more space (to cats, any horozntal surface is officially added space.) walmart and petsmart have a great deal of lovely carpetted cat furnishings that have multiple "stories". anyhow. I think 2 is better than one, even in the smallest of apartments. you know why? Company ^,^.

I agree with the others about your apartment. Your apartment is about the size of mine & my 2 kitties are very comfy here. The only thing I don't like about it is that since my apartment is rather small, it's hard to find good places to put the litterboxes. I have a triangled corner one that is in my bedroom (how romantic, eh?) & of all the places the other one is underneath my dining room table (appetitizing too, huh?). Since I don't ever use my dining room table (except for storage of junk), it works for me....plus it's a covered one so people can't see inside.

As for the age of a cat you should get, it depends on you. Are you able to give enough attention to a kitten? Able to deal with all the kitten antics? If not, maybe you should go for a cat about the same age as yours already. Some cats don't like others & prefer to be alone. But on the other hand, others need to have that companionship. As for getting an older or more matured cat, I personally wouldn't get one that hasn't been around other cats before. I did that with my now deceased kitty & brought home a kitten on top of it all. She didn't like having another cat around & since she was about 9 or 10, she wasn't in the mood to deal with kitten behavior. Other people have had great success with that, but it didn't work out that great for my kitties.

Hope that helps you & hope you find the right kitty for your little family!

i have 3 cats in my one bedroom condo and it's working out fine. one thing to think about though is if you have 2 cats you'll need 2 litter pans. i have a corner pan that is covered in my room and then two others in my walk in closet. in the walk in closet i put those cheap, plasitic table cloths under the pans to catch flying litter. i have carpet in my closet so i didn't want to put the box just right on the carpet. anyway... lol it seems to work.
