Hola. I wasn't quite sure where this post went so I'm directing it here. If it doesn't go here, feel free to yell and throw things, then please redirect me. ^^;;;

I am constantly rescuing kitties and helping them find new homes. Well recently I was going through an economic crisis and decided three female recent rescues could wait on spaying and I would just cat proof the house so they couldn't escape.

Bad idea.

Four ripped screens later I think I have three pregnant cats. The problem being I need to get them spayed, and have the funds for it now. I plan on keeping all three of these girls, so I want to do whats best for them. Their vaccinations are sitting in the fridge, but until I know what to do they're not getting them. Now I know I can get two of them spayed, as they're not far along at *all* but the other one is very bulgy ( was in bad condition when I got her, thought she was a lot younger then she actually is, may have already been pregnant >.< ).

I was wondering, how far along in pregnancy can you still get your cat spayed, and if I can go ahead and vaccinate the other two since I'm getting their kittens aborted anyways? And also if anyone knows how much extra vets charge for pregnant females to get spayed? *waves around FoA spay certificates* ^^;;;

Thanks for any and all help. ^^

It depends on the vet about when to get them spayed. Mine will spay a mom cat no matter how far along she is if I request it. He doesn't like to do it, but understands the need is great. He agrees with me, that sometimes the hardest choice is the best for all.

About your ripped screens, you can put up decorative trellis over your windows and your cats can get air and not get out-

::nods:: Thank you so much. Now it's down to just hoping that the only place in my area that accepts low cost spay certificates will agree to spay her. And would you know if I can just go ahead and give vaccines to all three then?

These cats were strays? or ferals? I would get them tested first. The vaccines may be a moot point if any are infected, because during mating season, many females become infected by a male carrying something-

The vet I worked for (who would spay no matter how far along - though once we were told a shelter cat was not far a long and she was ready to pop 'em out, so we kept her.... but normally he goes ahead and spays them) would charge about $36 extra (canadian) for pregnant cats. (or obese cats, or cats right in estrus..) It takes a bit more time in these cases, as things are swollen/engorged with blood/hidden in lots of fat/etc.

You should talk to the organization you got the certificates from, they may work something out with you.

I agree, spay the two girls who are not far along for sure, as for the one who is showing see what your vet thinks. I work in a vet clinic in Canada as well, and we charge an additional $35 for in heat or pregnant spays (because they take a little longer to do).

The spay can be done at any point.

The later into the pregnancy it gets, the longer the recovery is for the mom, but if you don't have a good home for the kittens, and can't provide one, the operation is the best choice you have.

It's a little riskier, and takes more time and care for the vet to do the procedure, so he will most likely charge you extra, but I would have it done.

At mu clinic we will spay a cat no matter how far along she is. The earlier the better of course. It is sad to do but necessary and most vets recognize this. We charge an extra $40.
As far as vaccinating goes I would hold off. On the off chance you don't get the cat spayed in time the vaccine can have some serious effects on the kittens. Better to wait until they are all done then give them their vaccines IMO.
